After driving a Cummins for almost 9 years, I decided on a change. I hope I made the right choice. Have had my share of problems with the CTD over the years. Hope it's not the same with the 6.0. I've been doing a lot of reading on this forum & decided the 6.0 was best for me. I bought a 2005 F350 CC, LB, SRW, King Ranch which appears to be in excellent shape. It comes with custom 20" wheels & tires along with the original factory wheels/tires & Handy toolbox/tank in the bed. I bought it on Ebay & fly to Dallas tomorrow to do the final commitment inspection & drive it back to Reno (approx.1600mi.). Hpoe to be home by Sunday. With the 53 gal. bed tool box/tank, I can conceivebly make it home without filling up based on 17 to 19 mpg. But I'll fuel up half way home- before it gets expensive. California, Nevada & Utah are highest compared to the rest of nation.

It has a 4" flowmaster cat back exhaust & Bullydog intake filter- but the rest is stock. The previous 1 owner claims the truck has been excellent with no issues ever. I had an oasis report before I commited on it & it was clean, thanks to Maximum4x4- John. Also thanks to spikebee- Spike for looking up other potential trucks.

Is there anything I should do after I get the truck home? I used Delo oil in my CTD. What do you all use? Hope to be posting more as I go. Probably have tons of ???'s.

Since you've done an OASIS and it came back clean, you should be good to go!

Scroll back in the threads and find those talking about oil and filters. Since I'm still new to diesels I tried reading all I could. What I learned was that Motorcraft filters and oil are probably the least expensive out there....and Ford can't point fingers at your maintenance as long as you stick to the change intervals.

Congrats on the new truck. If you keep your maintanence up on the 6.0L, it will work for you. Oil at 5k and try to stay on schedule with the fuel filters. Dont let it idle a lot because it will gum the egr valve and turbo.

Congrats on the new truck and happy to see you came over from the darkside Jet. I have an 05 and have had no issues. I'm sure you'll enjoy yours as much as I do mine. Have a safe trip home!

The only thing I'd question is the intake. There's nothing better than the stock air intake system. If you have a turbo problem, Ford may not want to cover it under it's warranty. If you can have the dealer change it back to stock, you ought to consider it.

Could it be true, the CTD is not the perfect engine the Cummins Gods led us to believe.

Sorry could not resist.

Okay on to your questions

Remove the A/M intake as soon as possible and re-install the factory Donaldson air intake. A/M air intakes are the worst thing you can do for this motor.

I would change all the fluids, and replace the fuel filters.

Run any CI-4+ or CJ-4 rated oil of the proper weight for your conditions.

Buy the oil filters at Wal Mart, the Fram filters are made by OEM Racor and are only $15.00. (Btw Pep Boys runs coupons to by Fram filters for $3.50). Only use OEM Racor Oil and Fuel filters not A/M will fit (ie Wix, Purlator)

Buy your fuel filters at your local IH dealer as they are the cheapest place to get them $36.

Only use "Mercon SP" fluid in the transmision.

Read the Tech folder at the top of the forum for more good info.

Congratulations on your new truck

I get the delo synthetic at Costco 5W-40 @ $13.00 or so a gallon (best deal i have found so far) trans filter is now available as a kit from Fram and as black hat said fuel filters at IH be very picky bought filters oil & fuel as these injaction systems are extermley dependant on clean oil & fuel. Enjoy youre first long trip without the kidney belt (anyone who Has had a Dodge knows what I mean) Kindest Reguards, Jim.

Thanks for all the comments. Drove back from Dallas over the weekend. Drove back great except for 3 concerns. Hope you can help me. First after about an hour cruising down the road out of Dallas the cruise control tripped off with an immediate ABS light on the dash. Reset the cruise control OK but the ABS stayed on. Several hours down the road, the light went out. Then on the next day it was on , then off, then on, then off. Finally, just north of Vegas Cruise control tripped & light stayed on untill I shutdown in Reno. started it the next morning & the light is out, & is still out. Any thoughts?

Concern # 2, There sounds like a fan running off & on behind the glove compartment when decelerating to idle & accelerating off idle. It sounds like the bearings are going out in the fan & quite loud. A friend who used to have an '05 said that is normal & thinks it's the motor clutch fan. Can any one confirm that?

concern #3, Sometimes when I let off the accelerator, it sounds like the turbo shuttering or chugging. I used to get this once & a while on my Cummins. Is this fairly normal?

A friend of mine w/ a 2006 CC SB FX4 Lariat (55M miles) had the same thing w/ the ABS light happen to him. He is taking it in to the dealer this week. I did a search on this forum and didn't find anything except a thread on bad wheel bearings (I do not believe this is his problem). I plan to search on the superduty forum unless someone has seen this before.

If the ABS sensor is bad or the brake switch this will cause the CC to shut off. Take it in and let the dealer read the codes and find the faulty sensor

The Visconic fan clutch is PCM controlled but it usually does not sound like it is coming from the glove box. Since it is in the glove box area of the engine compartment it could be a couple of things
1) Vacuum pump running
2) Small crack in the up pipe or egr up-pipe. (This is usually more of a screech though and shows up under load)

If you are letting of the accelerator fairly quickly and since you have the "crappy" A/M intake you are hearing turbo "fart" (that's a technical term BTW)

Hope this helps

I have an 05 as well

ABS and cruise issue is the sensor on top of the rear diff. Not sure if mine needed replacement or just a cleaning/contact/connector issue.

The noise you are talking about. Mine does the same thing. Really weird kind of bad bearing or marble rolling around sound. Not super loud like something is going to blow up, but definately noticable. My buddy drives a duramax and when he heard this noise, he said mine "seems to run pretty good, but sure makes some weird noises."

On issue #3, I can only speculate that it is from the intake.

If you have a high pitched noise (squeal etc) this could be a cracked up pipe or the EGR Y-pipe has a small crack or leak which causes this sound under load.

No, its not like that and I don't think Jets is either.

I don't hear it under load. Like rolling up to a stop sign and I just push my clutch in and the RPMs drop. And right before it goes to a normal sounding idle, I get about 3 seconds of this noise. Then I let the clutch back out without giving any throttle, and the noise reappears again for about the same amount of time. And it sounds like it coming from the turbo area or glove box side. Difinatley not high pitched either (i have had the cracked up pipe and squeal before too) more of a groan and rattle combo..

I had to post up because I have had this noise for a while now and haven't read about anyone else ask about either. I also wasn't quite sure how to articulate it in words but when I read Jets description, I knew exactly what he was talking about.
