I Am Using The 302 Engine Harness That Came With The New Engine And I Plugged It Into The 4 Plugs On The Driver Side Fender That Was Already In My Truck From The 351. The Harness That Plugs In The Ecu On The Firewall Was From The 351.
should i put the wiring harness from my 1990 351w motor on the 1988 302 that is now in the truck now so that i have the wire for the purge solenoid? the plug that i am using from the pcm is from the 351.
Then you would not have the plug for the knock sensor.
Maybe you can run a wire from the engine plug and splice it to the plug off the 351. It should be a Gray wire with a Yellow stripe and the Red hot wire from the Power Relay.
run a wire for the purge solenoid? what will happen if i dont put a solenoid at all?
I am not sure how to answer that but here is the decryption but I am sure that you already know this.
EEC-IV Evaporative Emission System
Fuel Tank Venting
Fuel vapors trapped in the sealed fuel tank are vented through the orificed vapor valve assembly in the top of the tank. The vapors leave the valve assembly through a single vapor line and continue to the carbon canister (located in the engine compartment or along the frame rail) for storage until they are purged to the engine for burning.
Canister Purging
Purging the carbon canister removes the fuel vapor stored in the carbon canister. With an EEC-IV controlled EVAP system, the flow of vapors from the canister to the engine is controlled by a purge solenoid CANP or vacuum controlled purge valve. Purging occurs when the engine is at operating temperature and off idle.

i guess what i am asking is that you had told me to find a specific ecu for my new engine/trans combo. the engine came out of a 1988 which you said used a purge valve and not a electric solenoid like the 351 in my 1990. now, the ecu that was put in the truck is from a 1991 f150, 302/e40d. do i just use the same purge valve that the 88 f150 used (non-electrical)? as i mentioned, the wiring harness on my 302 does not have a plug for the electrial type solenoid. is the 1991 ecu going to be sending signals to a valve that is not there, or did they use the same type of purge valve (non-electrical) in the 1991 f150 too?
The 1991 ECU will try to open the purge valve when the engine is warm an off idle. I do not know if it will turn on the CEL if the Sol. valve is not there.
Which valve you use is up to you, they will both work except you will have to run the wires to run the Sol one and hoses for non-electrical one.
