Dual Shocks

I would like to put dual shocks on my '79 Bronco. I was looking at the radius arms on it and I was wondering. Can I put dual shocks on it by putting a right radius arm (the one with the shock mount behind the axle) on the left side? Then put a left "radius arm cap" (what ever it is called) (the one with the shock mount on it) on the right radius arm? Then put the top shock mounts where they need to be. There are holes in the frame that look like they will work to mount the top shock mount. Do the holes line up right without drilling new holes?
Are the radius arms interchangeable? Has anyone ever done this? Will this work or am I just crazy?

Thank you

Dual Shocks

You are completely off your rocker. What you need is a set of radius arm caps off of a truck with dual shocks and the shock towers off of the same truck. I did this not to long ago. I also know that sky jacker offers a dual front shock kit, but I am unfamiliar with it. What you are talking about is not possible without some big time jerry rigging. Hope this helps.

Dual Shocks

I was wanting to do the same thing to my 78 Bronco. And I was thinking the exact same thing as you were. Personally, I find no reason, yet, why this won't work. Since I'm doing ALOT of undercarriage work on Baby now, I'm gonna see if I can swing a swap like that and keep ya posted. Don't get yer hopes up tho, I may not be able to do it for a little while. A little while being a few months.

But tuffguy's idea also sounds like it'd work as well.

Drive it like ya stole it.....cause I DO!

Dual Shocks

Good, I am not the only crazy one out there!! I don't see any reason the it will not work either. I look at all the parts and don't see any obvious differentces between the right and the left radious arms. (Aside from the shock mount.) I don't see any angles or curves in them. They look perfectly stright to me. Where the "C" bushings go look like they are square to the arm and not angled to fit on either side. I think that I can get the parts cheap enough so...., I am going to try it!!
I will keep you informed. Let me know how your's goes.

Mine's not gonna happen for a little while. We're in the middle of moving, so I won't be able to take this on for a few months after we're settled in with a place to live, job, yada yada. Have you been able to get your double shocks on? If you have, I'd really like to know what it took to make it happen.

Keep the rubber side down,
David

Hmmm my 83 has stock dual front shocks so it seems that you could maybe locate those parts in the junkyard or a dealer. Let me know how it goes

Any luck with the conversion, I would like to do the same with my 1979 F150, make it dual shock. I think all one needs are the two front radius arm caps, which gives you the bottom shock mount for both sides. The top shock mounts bolt to the frame, the drivers side bracket is also the track bar bracket, Did you try this yet was it difficult? Let me know I am going to the yard tomorrow.

Geez, ADDING shocks... I took the extra pair OFF my 92. Of course its not as heavy as your 78 but the added shocks did nothing but make the ride stiffer to the point of being uncomfortable, especially after going to longer premium grade shocks. (Bilsteins).

However I would tend to agree with the guys that you should seek out a truck that was equipped with them OEM. Although I am not certain that quad front shock even became an option til 1980 or later on the half ton trucks.

Keep your fingers crossed that the original posters are still around. This was 9 years ago.

I had the dual shocks in the fron of my 89 Eddie Bauer. If you need to plow it will help, these trucks sag bigtime with a plow on the front.

Unless you are putting air shocks on, extra shocks wont stop the truck from sagging. Regular shocks dont support weight, just dampen movement.

HA! Wow, that's something, Rich. I missed it completely. Well, better late than never for the discussion I suppose.
