You will have to drop the trans, thats pretty much the worst of it (electrical connectors, cooler lines, drive shaft). You should also drain TC before pulling trans.

When you remove the TC, the lockup shaft may try to come with it, but if it does, it can only be reinstalled one way. Lifting the TC enough to take weight off the stator may prevent the shaft from snagging.

The torque converter on the E4OD will hit three notches as it engauges the pump seal, lockup shaft and then the pump gears. I would take a reference measurement of the offset difference between the TC mounting face and the bellhousing mounting surface. That way, you'll know when the new one is in all the way.

the job is fairly simple but comes with a few snags. The e4od is a very heavy unit your definalty want to think about a transmission jack. First drain trans remove plate covering converter drain converter. remove drive shaft then you can pull the transfercase from the trans or leave the together ( i like to pull the transfer case seperate). then undo eletrical and i think that you have to pull the starter but not 100%sure. you then have to unbolt the converter fromt the flywheel there are four bolts.then you can unbolt the trans from the motor (dont forget the top two bolts lol). the converter will come down with the trans.

The E4OD is the only automatic transmission avalable for that year of diesel ford truck. Some say the C6 was optional, but I have not been able to confirm this, if you have overdrive, its not a C6. Shifter should show P RN(D)21 with (D) being overdrive, and a cancel switch to limit the trans to 3rd gear when needed.

Any reason why you want to replace TC?

1986 last year of the 4spd manual. 1987 was ZF-5. 1988 was the last year of the C6. 1989 was 1st generation E4OD. 1990-1991 2nd generation with multiple changes in wiring harness and transmission control box. 1992-1994.5 Same transmission with possible torque converter updates for the turbo models more electrical updates and wiring harness changes.

The C6 was an available option, but for fleet sales only I was told.

I rebuilt enough of them when they first come out, and I saw all the weak points.

Well once again thanks guys um i think the tc is going bad i have been having problems with the truck this year that i thought were all fuel related however i replaced the fuel injection pump and lift pump air and fuel filters this did fix most of the problems but theres still sumthing wrong its hard to start hot and cold (worse when Cold) and it kinda stutters like it wants to stall separt problem i think from this, its also jumping when in gear sometimes so i thought that the tc might be part of the problem any ideas are appreciated.

Jumping in gear. When and how is it doing this? Is it in park, or are you driving while this happens? Does it stall when you come to a stop while still in gear?

Check my earlier post for how to identify a C6 from E4OD.

The TC clutch could be engaging and/or staying on when its not supposed to (as I think you already suspected). Have you tried to pull any fault codes?

Some black smoke is to be expected, but you may be seeing more than is normal with the TC keeping the revs lower than usual.

I would suspect a E4OD if your having that trouble. C6 torques have no lock up clutches.
