79 quad shocks versus dual shocks

I know this, because I have two trucks to compare it to. I have a 78 4X4, with dual shocks, and a 79 4x4 with quad shocks. No lift kits on either one. But the 79 with quads sits higher than the 78, and I clear 33s with 4-6 inches on the fenders. The 78, I can't. What is the difference?
I was told years back they were called 'high-boys', but these are F-150s, not 250s!
Any insight?

One other thing.
I can be going down the road, and the 79 shuts down like I turned the key off! Good alt, and new battery. tested the box and it is good, recently replaced the pick-up coil plugs and wires. Still does it! Let it set for 10 minutes and I am off again!!

I know, I know, probably allready a post about these problems,,,, but with 1100 plus pages,,,,,,,,

Test the ignition modulator when it is HOT (use a hair dryer to heat it up)

Someone put on heavier coil/springs. Did you check for the shackle flip?

I have had these trucks before also, as well as a bronco, I think mine sat an inch mabye 2 higher, I think they came with a heavier spring rate, mine also had the front and rear sway bar with the option and a limited slip rear axle. Might have been a heavy duty suspension option, not sure though.

If it had factory 15x8 wheels with 10x15C RWL tires (31-10.50s, and ONLY with the wagon wheels) I THINK it should have sat slightly higher then with the shorter tires on the 6 inch rims. Look on your door data plate if you can still read it. Most I think came with L78-15B PTs.

I know Ford used several different sets of springs, but I don't know the rates offhand for any of them.

I put front and rear swaybars on my 1978 F150 from a 1979 Bronco, and am in the process of installing the front quadshocks as well. Got the upper mounts on, but havn't got around to switching out the bottoms yet, and likely won't until I get new bushings and such.

The handling package had the front swaybar, gas filled quadshocks, heavy duty rear shocks and heavy duty front springs. The Supercabs I think also had heavy duty front shocks. On the F150s you could also get quadshocks as a stand alone option. On the 4x4s, I'm pretty sure if you got the front swaybar, the quadshocks were included (not stand alone). Not sure how they did the rear swaybar, it was optional on Broncos, but not sure about the F series. I can't ever remember seeing one with a factory swaybar, not that that means much. They also had a high capacity steering pump, but I think that must have been an inside joke at Ford.

I'm curious though as to what the origional wheels and tires were as to how high it sits.
Pretty much all these trucks with the origional springs won't sit as high as they once did anyway. The Bronco my swaybars and stuff came off of did sit a little higher (maybe an inch) then my truck, but not enough for me to worry about with 33s.

my uncle ordered my f150 with heavy duty coil springs from the factory and i have the window sticker in my pics that shows it. and almost 30 yrs later it still sits up about 3 inches higher than my other truck did. it had 35's that measured 33" and only hit the radius arms at full lock ( i think the stops are not set right) but doesnt rub anything else.

Uriah;

The tires and rims factory for the truck are as follows;
Tires, L78-15C
Rims; 15X6 JK
GVWR; 6500lbs
If that helps any. The truck has front sway bar, but not rear.

It's got the max GVWR for a 1/2 ton, so maybe it has heavier springs because of that. I think there MAY have been one heavier as well for a snow plow package or something. At any rate, still not sure if it would make it heavier AND higher, or just heavier.

Maby a pin hole in the steel fuel line somewhere, or a bad pump. Sounds like you got the electrical end covered.

Might want to recheck your Duraspark module AND ignition switch. I've bought new modules (Wells comes to mind...) that acted strange.

Next time it happens, make sure you're getting juice to the coil.

OK, So far I have;
New plugs, wires, cap, rotor,pick-up coil, but today replaced the entire dizzy because of the vac. advance falling off in my hand. New battery terminals, starter solenoid, And have yet to road test it. Checked timing, set at 10 deg. But I need to re-hose the vacuum. The timing stays the same after I plug the vac hose back up. The advance is plugged directly into the right front of the carb. Has building vacuum with engine rpms and none at idle, but I want it as close to 'right' as I can. And I am needing a new EGR as mine has a busted diaphragm in it. I looked at the endless vac. diagrams here and I am really confused at the moment, but I'll have to manage!
Any insights or suggestions?

A shock absorber has absolutely no effect on ride height.

Guessing at what part may be bad is ludicrous. Use the troubleshooting routine found in any service manual to determine what is wrong.

I know shocks dont, unless they are coil-overs. I just thought the quad shock systems were a heavier duty, there-fore sat a little higher.

I try to jump out and diagnose the problem when it happens, it just doesn't last long. With in 10 minutes it fires back up and away I go. Checked all the connections, and my volt-ohm meter lays beside me on the seat!!
