oil change tips

OK...First time with a diesel so I don't want to F%$ this up. Any tips, tricks or warnings to getting this done? I am already about 1000 miles past the due mileage and I have a 2000 mile trip coming up in a week and a half pulling a horse trailer. I just don't want any problems.

Thanks all!

The good news is as long as you have the CORRECT oil filter and enough oil, it's pretty easy. The toughest part for me was running out to buy a socket large enough to tighten the oil filter cover back on with.

Just have something handy (I use an old tin pie plate) when you pull the oil filter out of the housing...you don't want to drip oil on the way out of the engine compartment.

Oil filter cover? Is it not just a larger version of what I had in my F150? Filter unscrews...prep the new one and put it back on?

Cover is seperate from the filter?

**Looks back at the links** Diff engine?

MSGTG is thinking of the 6.0, which is a filter element inside a reusable housing. I think your 7.3L filter is like a conventionaly car oil filter just bigger.

Here's a trick:

Remove the fill cap and put the shop vac hose over the tube. Turn it on and then remove the drain plug. The shop vac will keep the oil in the pan and not all over your hand as you remove the plug. Once you're clear, turn off the vac. The oil will then fall into the drain pan.

Another:

Take an awl and poke a hole in the bottom of the filter before you remove it. Make dang sure you have an oil filter wrench that will fit though. You can drain a quart and a half of hot and heavy oil out of it before you remove it.

Oil filter wrench?.......Do you guys all use one?........I just hand-tighten on.....and hand-remove off.......

Good links though, Pete and Bud.......

Just did mine about 200 miles ago.....Mobile Delvac 1300 Super (15W-40)....and the FL-1995 filter.......Although I HAD been using Shell-Rotella T (15W-40)......

Question for BillyBob....When you say you're 1000 miles past the due oil change, what mileage interval are you using?.........3,000 miles....4,000 miles......5,000 miles?........More than that?......I know a lot of us change the oil at 5,000....7,500.....or sometimes 10,000.......And we all swear we're right...(haha)....

Now it sounds like you haven't done it yet....and I guess you have no idea when it was last done?.......or how well it was done?......Which means you should probably do it right away anyway.....

But let me know what interval you're basing the "1000 miles past due" on.......

I use the wrench to make sure I can go one complete turn after contact of the seal. I change my oil every 3500-4500 miles which works out to a mind numbing 50+ times...

Oh yeah, 15 quarts, including the one and a half you pour into the filter before you install it, will be just fine. I usually pour in 16, but some people really get excited when I recommend putting in that much.

The dealer I bought it at changed it March 13th and had the change at mileage written down at 127k...I am at 128K. So I am going by what they put...That would make it 3 mo/3000 miles.

Yes you do have to fill the new filter before installing it. It is so that the oil is moved through the engine quicker during the initial startup after an oil change. Less "dry running" time. Less damage to the engine.
