This is the article I used when I got ready to do my first oil change on my truck. It's very easy to understand and has good pictures. The KD oil filter wrench rocks. I ordered one on-line and was really glad I did. It is a very high quality tool that will last a lifetime. The big difference that I noticed doing oil changes on a diesel is that the filter actually needs to be tightened with the wrench one full turn from where it makes contact. With every other vehicle, I just tightened it as tight as I could by hand. One thing I neglected to change was the oil drain plug gasket. That was a mistake. It had a very minor leak (drops formed) but no significant oil loss. If you have a nice driveway, you'll definitely want to make sure that you change it.
Look in my gallery for the Fumoto Drain Valve... it makes oil changes a snap and there are no plug o-rings or gaskets to replace. The "squeeze ring" they provide for locking the handle in place is a royal PITA on the first install, and I thought it would be a PITA to remove again, but it is actually quite easy to get off and back on, now that it has ridden on the drain valve for about 14,000 miles. It was even easy to get off on my first oil sample at 6,000 miles.
Thanks Guys For The Info On The Oil Filter. New Owners At The Oil Change Place And They Don't Fill Up The Filter Unless You Ask. They Say Their Computer Will Tell Them When A Filter Needs To Be Filled Prior To Installing It. Next Time I Will Make Sure They Do This With Me Watching.
