undercoating cab

so I'm trying to figure out what I want to do with the underside of my cab, I have it off the truck and am doing a restoration so I don't want to have to pull it off again, the truck has some sort of undercoating applied to it allready, but it is coming off in some spots. Has anyone used hurculiner as an undercoating? I've used it in a truck bed and was pleased, but would love to hear a success story.

I'm just not sure i'll be able to get all the old stuff off, but I would assume that the hurculiner would stick to it as long as it was clean?

how about Rhino liner?

any help or info on the subject would be sweet! Thanks

I rhino lined the bottom of my cab and the inside on the floor. I don't have the truck together yet and longterm results are yet to be seen, but the way it holds up on the cab, it should last a very long time. I did sandblast the entire bottom and the inside floor for better adhesion.

Yes! I totally forgot about sandblasting, being out in the sun does things to your brain, will sandblasting take off undercoating? i've been out there with a putty knife and screwdriver, which is kinda a drag.

thanks

I had access to an industrial sandblaster so it took everything off. I had to be careful not to get to close with the tip and also be careful not to blast the the "appearance" sheetmetal because it will warp. A smaller 10 gallon sandblaster or so should take it off also with a good compressor. Might take some time, but when it's done, it's done.

Here is a link to a thread that has some pics of mine;

The sand or cutting media from sandblasting kind of bounces off of the petroleum based undercoating. Use a soft flame torch or a wide flame propane torch in one hand and a paint scraper in the other. Sucks but we have all done it. Do not attempt it without beer.

Not sure if have same issue with the 78, but on 65, there are many water, or moisture relief channels thru-out cab want to make sure don't clog with the undercoating, paint, etc. While cab is accessible may want to go thru and make sure they are open, sometimes accumulate dirt and debris and possible hurry the rust process.

good point on not covering up the drain holes. when my cab was Rhino Lined, the guy made sure he didn't cover any drain holes or bolt holes.

Thanks, I just went and bought a sandblaster, so we'll see if that works, and if I get time to work on it

I used Herculiner on the bottom side of my 84 cab after extensive repair work. It looks great and dries to a nice hard finish, I think it will hold up fine.
