Fuel Filter Question

I went to remove my old fuel filter on my 1993 5.8 bronco..took the clamps off each end of the filter and tried to tug the fuel lines off. They didnt seem to want to come off. So before i mess anything up too bad from pulling real hard is there a special trick or way to get the lines off the old fuel filter.? Thanks...

Go to a local parts house and ask for a fuel line removal tool set. They are usually plastic and are round with a smaller round tip that protrudes from the larger end. They swing open and you insert them over the line and push them against the inside of the connector(the small tit end). While pushing with the tool pull on the line and it will come out.

this is a set from astro, they are better if ya can find 'em locally, they're made of alum. instead of plastic. http://www.mytoolstore.com/astro/asthan13.html

I have a set of both and usually use the plastic ones more often, they last a good while.

I just did this today. You need the 5/16" size. You can but the plastic set for like 10 bucks at advance.

well i bought the plastic tool and it doesnt seem to work...i put it over the metal piece of the fuel filter and slid it under the conector from the fuel line and tried pulling the line off....it wont come off...in the haynes manual it says the line should come of with little force and i was really forcing the thing and it still wont come off....any suggestions?

Be sure your putting the pressure on the tool, not the line your removing, There is a spring type round clip inside the connector and it has to be fully clear of the line bubble in order for it to be removed.

Clean it good? I'm trying to remember....seems like a hand wedged between tool and filter, other hand very carefully pushing connector toward tool while gently twisting a little back and forth and then pulling apart.

It's a pain, but it will come off there. My old filter was busted up after I got done with it.

does it matter if the pressure in the system has been released?

I did it without releasing pressure. For safety, no drop light or pilot lights around. Had several rags. To release pressure I think I remember someone said to have it running and either switch the inertia switch behind passenger foot panel of pull the fuel pump relay from under the hood to stop the fuel pump.

push the lines strait up when you disconnect, no more gas will leak when you get them vertical.
