i need to find a ****** snap/tow rope for my mud truck i looked at ebay and the biggest one they have is 4" thick and like 30' long. i want at least a 6" thick strap but i dont think they make anything longer than 30" but i could get two but does anypone know where i can get a big ****** rope or tow rope. thanks.
You do not want to get two, and put them together. This would require a shackle, and in the event of strap failure, the shackle becomes a projectile, and returns to one vehicle or the other in a big, deadly hurry.
I own several straps, and my largest is 6" wide, and only 30' long.
For pulls that require a longer rope, I use marine grade dock rope. I usually purchase a spool about 250 feet long, and split the cost with a couple of buddies. We purchase 2", and 2.5 inch stuff. It costs a fortune, but well worth the money. It lasts for a long time if you keep it clean. The biggest failures occur after mud has gone into the material, and the dirt wears away at the fibers.
This rope is very stretchy, and very strong. It is not typical braided rope. It looks like rope that rock climbers use, only gigantic.
Thats the problem with ****** strap, when not used properly they are deadly. A 30' 6" should be all you ever need. You can take one strap and loop it onto the end of another without a shackle but you well NEVER get them apart again and they cut into each other and shorten their lifespan. Never put the loop end around a hitch ball, that just becomes a bullet. Seen one go through a chevy tailgate and then into the back of the cab. Never make it longer with a peice of chain unless you are willing to bet your LIFE that the strap will break before the chain. Because if the chain breaks first it will total the receiving truck and anyone nearby. I have had just a strap go through my 77' grill, radiator and start rapping around my turning fan before I shut down.
ya i know the boat ropes (im in the marine business) i have used the 3/4" rope and they were great but they break as well on hard pulls i think im just goin to go to the boat store and get the 2"x125' rope for $300 does that sound about right?
You could try the rope called Spectra. It will not stretch very much. When it breaks it
is supposed to just lay down on the ground. At my work we used it to jerk a 50 ft long
by 30ft wide tug boat using a Cat 988 loader. Also use it to tow a hovercraft that weigh 75,000 pds loaded with no problems.
i need to find a ****** snap/tow rope for my mud truck
A ****** strap (recovery strap / tug 'em strap) is not the same as a tow rope (tow strap).
A ****** strap is constructed to allow the recovery vehicle to use kinetic energy to "******" the stuck vehicle out. The recovery vehicle takes a bit of a run, the strap stretches, and the kinetic energy then pulls out the stuck vehicle. With this method, the recovery vehicle can be lighter/smaller than the stuck vehicle. A ****** strap has a loop sewn in each end.
A tow rope has no effective "give" and therefore can be used ONLY for towing, and not a ******-type recovery. Most tow ropes have a hook at each end; very dangerous for recovery purposes if something lets go.
Beerstalker, that is the best and longest starp you need.
We have a 10" on the farm we use to ****** out tractors and combines, but I have never broke a good 6" with a truck. But it takes so little to damage them. No cuts, no frays, no sunlight storage, don't let it stay muddy or wet. Never wrap around anything or it will damage it. Only use buckeye shackles and make them strong ones.
> can take one strap and loop it onto the end of another without a shackle but
> you well NEVER get them apart again
FWIW: If you take a small smooth branch and stick it between the loops it will separate them enough so you can get them apart later even if it is crushed flat.
the ****** strap sounds like it has way more potential for much more serious/dangerous/deadly consequences than a normal non stretchy tow strap that will not usually snap at you or your truck if it breaks causing severe trama to all parties involved, does it really work that much better than a tow strap?
much, much better. A strap with some give will store more energy and allow an equal size vehicle, or smaller one to extract the stuck one with minimal shock to either vehicle. A pre-stretched rope, or chain (man I hate to see that) requires a dead pull and is very dangerous. The tow strap will also fly back if it breaks. Anything will store energy and fly all over the place after it breaks.
I lace the strap or winch cable through the sleeves of an old sweatshirt before I tug with the strap, or pull with the winch. If breakage occurs, the weight of the wet shirt usually holds the strap down.
Not sure if it will hold a cable down, I have yet to break one, but it works pretty good on a strap.
With a chain or other tow rope you gently get them tight then apply pressure. You are using the traction the tow vehicle has to do the pulling.
****** strap you hook up a 30' strap to each vehicle, back up 10' or 29' (depending on the size of your *****) and floor it! One of these engineers can explain the math if needed. The forward motion of the recovery vehicle will go into the "rubber band". A F150 can jerk out a F550 buried to the frame. One of three things is going to happen: 1) the stuck vehicle is coming forward. 2) the recovery vehicle is going to jerked backwards. 3) the strap is going to break. Oh yah, 4) truck parts are going to break all over the place. But if used safely, in mud where loose of traction will save your draivetrain option 1 is the most common result. Why do you think this straps are rated for 30,000 to 50,000 lbs.
well i don,t know what they call it but it is a "rope" not a strap and it comes off tug boats and it stretches alot bout 5" round and as long as you like we use them here in florida swamp where everything sinks
i know all the people on here say a stretchy ****** strap is the way to go but from my personal expeirence one that dosen't strech is better and i know there are people who swear by them and know the math on how they work but i have never had one work for me. most times a stretchy strap will unload the rear of the pulling truck and not move the stuck one at all. most time it takes a good stong quick ****** just to move a stuck truck that is freewheeling.
