I have an '04 styleside screw, 4.6, auto, 4x4. (113k). I want to replace my front wheel bearings, but I haven't bought a repair manual, yet. Has anyone done this themselves? Am I correct in assuming I will need a press? I have replaced wheel bearings on FWD and 2WD but never on the front of a 4X4. Do I need a repair manual to get it all back together?
I have not done this on a 150 but have done it on a 250 and 350. Just knock out the races and reinstall new one with a race insurtion tool, or just have your parts store knock them in. Grease the bearing insert and reassemble.
I think they're sealed bearing units. The '07 shop manual just talks about removing the wheel hub/bearing assembly (which is also what the wheel studs are carried by), and it doesn't go into anything else about the bearing.
The hub removal procedure is pretty simple: remove dust cap, remove & chuck halfshaft nut, remove and support caliper and anchor plate, remove brake disc, detach speed sensor harness from brake hose, remove & chuck the 4 wheel hub bolts.
There's all kinds of warnings about not reusing the fasteners it says to chuck. Whether that's about bolt fatigue or just a way for them to make sure the fasteners have the correct thread locker, I don't know.
Do the bearings sound bad if you take the wheel off and spin them? If they are sealed, and the seals haven't been compromised, they may still be good to go.
Thanks VFR, for your info- it will definately will help..The sound is getting worse by the month, so they will have to be replaced eventually...
Wife had a neon a while back w/a bad wheel bearing. Dodge didn't recommend replacing just the bearing, but I did manage to find and replace just the bearing portion....
After some quick online searches looks like hubs are like $125 or $200+each. (With the whole heritage/styleside thing not sure which is the correct part). I figure I can save at least a couple hundred if I can push in new bearings...
Hopefully will get a chance to check it out this week... I will repost when I find out.

With the press fit on the outer race being fairly critical, I'm not too surprised they don't recommend pressing out the old one and pressing in a new one, too many knuckleheads out there with the wrong equipment and no clue how to press bearings properly.
Providing you can get the old bearing out without harming the hub, I'm with ya, save a hundred bucks or more each and replace just the bearing.
Dont know for sure about the 150, but have read on the bigger trucks that the bearings are not repackable replaceable. They have a plastic cage vs steel and are set too close together. Need to look at some of the 4wd mags to get an idea of the problem. There was a article in one of the diesel mags a month or so ago. $1800 to change out the front wheel bearings and hubs, axels for a f350, Look at, I think it is www.dynatrac.com or just do a search for dynatrac.
