Question Gas And Wheel Issue

Hello. First, I have a 97 E.B. w/ 197K and counting on the 5.4 engine. Anyway, my issue is that when I lived in Rhode Island, I would fill up and the display would read 350-420 miles to empty. Now I live in Philly and it only gets up to 300 miles. The dial was broken when I bought it so i've always went by the display. I had a tune up encluding a fuel filter change and trans fluid change in Rhode Island done long before I decided to move. Does anyone have a clue to what made this happen? My wife has a 2002 eddie w/ the 5.4 and she is having the same issue.

My other issue is that I have two Bazo B1 wheels for the ride and I'm looking to buy two more in good shape. Can anyone help with locating these wheels? They came out in 2002. My ride is still on the Bazo website. It is a very unique looking wheel. I"m looking to put them on my wife's ride.

Maybe, just maybe, you are getting worse gas mileage in Philly than you got in RI. Just a thought.

I understand that. I'm looking to see if it is because I live in the city now as compared to the open roads of southern New England or that something such as a sensor is causing the issue. Nothing was added or taken from the ride when I moved. If the gas out here is cheap, then so be it.

Has nothing to do with the quality of gas. If you are driving city driving compared to open road driving, there is the culprit.

So it sounds like the mileage estimator is basing how many miles to empty on the previous tank mileage and makes the assumption you will be driving in the same geographic area and with the same driving habits as your previous tank. In order to get it to change back to 350-420 miles you will first have to drive that distance on a tank in the country or freeway.

My guess would be that it's definately a difference caused by city driving, as well as different fuel formulations. Were you getting 10% - 15% ethanol in RI? The ethanol content definately reduces fuel mileage.

Cool

I think it is the gas make up. I started to feel the difference about two months after using nothing but philly gas. I do miss the highway driving. I use to drive 40 miles straight highway at my last job. Now I drive 6 miles of city streets. Stop and go traffic sucks for my Ex. Could I use some type of gas boost to help counter act the lost of gas milage? I still have friends in RI, I'll ask them if the gas has ethenol in it.

The difference in fuel mileage between 40 miles of highway and 6 miles of city driving will be substantial. My wife's Grand Cherokee (4.0L, 6 cyl) doen't do much better in city driving than my Expy. On the highway, the Jeep gets about 6 mpg better than the Expy.

Additives can be good to keep your fuel system clean & I use a product called Amsoil P.I. (Performance Improver) periodically, that I like very much. There's really no additive that's going to be a magic bullet for fuel mileage though. The key is keeping the engine tuned & using a good, slippery 5W-20 oil (I like synthetic Pennzoil or Royal Purple); tranny, transfer case & diffs changed every 50k mi or so, clean air filter, good plugs and DRIVING HABITS. Keep your foot out of it and coast to lights that are red, down hills, etc. as much as possible.

When gas hit $3./gallon two summer ago, I started obsessing over mileage. In fact, that's how my wife got the Grand Cherokee. I went out and bought that to replace my Expy & put the Expy up for sale. I couldn't get what I wanted for it, so I kept it (thank God), gave the Jeep to my wife & sold her Volvo sedan. I'm spoiled. A few extra bucks in fuel isn't worth giving up all the benefits of my Expy.

Besides, they ALL suck in city driving, unless you're willing to ride a bike or drive a death trap like a Mini or something. Gas is just TOO damned expensive no matter what you drive or how you look at it.

More ethanol should reduce gas mileage.

like others have said, it's mainly due to your change in driving habits. i average about 11-13 mpg all city, but when i drive 55-70 on the freeway i can get close to 20mpg. since you're only driving 6 miles to and from work now your car is hardly even getting a chance to warm-up (which is when it operates at it's optimal efficiency).

40 miles hwy vs. 6 miles stop/go = HUGE difference in mileage.
