I have been having problems lately with my 2001 Excursion with 7.3 PSD. <o> </o>
I turn the key to start but it will not crank over. All the usual lights come on but the starter will not engage. If I move my gear selector from Neutral back to park a few times - starter engages and the truck starts. <o> </o>
<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <o> </o> When I plug in my Superchips Tuner to check for error codes it comes out with a P0603 Internal Ctrl Mod KAM error and a P0683 Glow Plug Ctrl Mod to PCM Comm Circuit error. <o> </o>
<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> Becoming a real pain in the *** and seems to be getting worse. Anyone have similar issues? Not sure why moving the gear selector repeadedley fixes the situation if I get the above error codes. Anyone have any ideas? <o> </o>
<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <o> </o> Thanks in advance for your help
Hold key in start position and move gear selector up and down. Does the stater engage and disengage in about the same spot?
TRS (Transmission Range Selector) on the side of the trans might be going bad or the electrical connector loose ect.
Neutral safety switch needs adjustment? Shift cable Maybe just out of adjustment. The cable can stretch over time. Is the shift lever getting more difficult to move.
Thanks - As I remember it - when I bought the truck, I had an issue where the Overdrive switch at the top in the Gear selector lever shorted out and activated my PATS security and I was dead in the water - back to the dealer it went and supposedly they fixed the situation. Now I'm wondering.
I'll give Cuda Jims idea a try and see if it starts in the same location. Changing gears feels fine, not hard to switch gears. Truck has only 60,000 mile on her.
It appears to only start right before the P selection every time. Is this a matter of needing to adjust the shift cable? Is this an easy thing I can do myself - or best performed at a transmission shop.
Cable Adjustment —Shift Indicator
Remove the upper instrument panel steering column cover.
Place the gearshift lever in the (D) position.
Rotate the gearshift lever clockwise until it bottoms out (first gear), then rotate two detents counterclockwise ((D) position).
Hang an eight pound weight on the gearshift lever.
Center the pointer in the middle of the (D) position.
Rotate the thumbwheel located on the bottom of the steering column to adjust the pointer.
Remove the eight pound weight.
Carefully move the gearshift lever from detent to detent and compare with transmission settings. Readjust if necessary.
Install the upper instrument panel steering column cover.
Tenn I think that wiring only has to do with the OD button.
Agreed. I was thinking him cranking the shifter up and down and then it will start. The start and run wiring runs through there but I'm not exactly sure if it could be affected by the shifter..
I may be in left field on this one. I'm familiar with that real estate.
I'm pretty sure the instructions Alan posted are just for the pointer in the dash. The pointer is purely something for the driver to look at. The adjustment for the TRS is done under the truck IIRC. It may be under the dash where the cable is attached to the steering column. I don't remember, sorry. I don't have my repair manual or I would post the directions. Maybe someone else will jump in.
That is correct Cuda. I got pulled away for Moma's day duties.
After insuring the selector is correct (Above procedure) the second part is under the truck on the tranny but I dont want to try to explain that without the pics. PM me your address and I'll send you the PDF.
P0683 Glow Plug Ctrl Mod to PCM Comm Circuit error
No - I haven't spent a tonne of time trying to figure that one out. I believe it has possibly to do with the actual Glow Plug Control Module - or connections to it - but I haven't investigated it thoroughly sice me truck is running fine.
