Parking Brake Problem on 97 Explorer
My 97 Explorer 4WD has rear disc brakes with the "mini-drum" for the parking brake. I was checking the function of the parking brake in preparation for state inspection. I have to apply a lot of pressure on the pedal in order to keep the vehicle from moving when in Drive or Reverse. Then when I release the parking brake, the vehicle will not move in Reverse. If I put it into Drive, it will move forward, although a little sluggish, and then it can go in Reverse. I checked the movement of the cables all the way from the foot pedal to each rear wheel while someone else engaged and released it, and everything seemed to be working smoothly. Any ideas what can be causing this sticking or sluggishness?

I would say the mechanism is rusty. It is not that hard to check out. safely chock and jack the rear wheels off the ground. Pull the tires and the caliper (check the pads while your there), and the disc will come right off. Inspect all the moving parts for rust. if dirty, clean and use a good lube like zep 45.

A few months ago I took my 96 Explorer AWD into our local shop to have the brakes done along with the two parking brake drums. The parking brake drums and inside mechanisms were a rusted fiasco. Research seems that this is common for this to happen. Be prepared for what you might find and the work to put it back in order...
