Water Leak

I notice that the coolant is leaking from around the thermostat housing. It has used up all of the coolant from the reservoir. I understand that there is a gasket under the housing, if changed do you think this will solve the problem or will i have to dig further. My vechicle is a 2000 Explorer XLT 4.0L V6 SOHC

as far as i know there is o-ring with a groove in it that goes around the thermostat, so i would start there and inspect the housing for cracks while you have it off
