The dipstick on my truck is a bugger to get in or out... I have to fight it either way. Could this affect the reading it gives me? Any reason why it would be so difficult to move? Putting it in the last 2 inches is the worst. Should I get a new one? And if so do i just go get one from a junkyard or can you buy new ones?
Is it the dipstick, or the tube (does the dipstick appear to be damaged?) I would think you can find a used tube, dipstick, or both. Just be sure that it is reading correctly when you are done.
Perhaps someone put in a dipstick that's too long and it's hitting the bottom of the oil pan? You mentioned in a previous thread that it had 2 quarts too many when you got it? Could give you false measurements.
Measure it, and post the length, someone will be able to let you know if its the right one. If you have a part #, post it and someone here should be able to check it out for you.
Well problem figured out... after i measured the stick i was fighting the stick back in and noticed a dent half way down the tube. felt it and its pretty banged up there.... so if i go take one off of a junkyard, it needs to be off the same sized engine and a 4WD? do they just unscrew?
Depending on where the dent in the tube is, you may be able to use a hammer and lightly tap a wooden dowel down the inside of the tube to remove the dent.

Take a pair of round jawed pliers and try and squeeze the dent back to round. If you are careful this can work. Ya don't have to get it perfect. And it is easier than replacing the tube.
Not only is it easier to do that but, man it is a pain in the rectal area to put the dipstick tube back in, it doesnt just screw in like you would think, it actually slips right in but it has to be resealed and it sucks trying to make it seal. I would try to squeeze the dent out before replacing it.
i need to slightly move the angle of the tube. i want to slightly move it so its more angled toward the front rather then pointing up. (not relocating) how would you suggest doing this? my manual says nothing about the dipstick tube.
