Just seeing if anyone has found a supplier for fender patch panels for the 48-50 Fords 1/2 tons, basically just need the section at the bottom where the running board bolts on? I am not looking for total replacements as the rest of the fender is pretty good. Any help would be appreciated.
I agree with AX, that is likely the easiest of the 'rust prone' panels to make and install. A small piece of 14-16 gauge flat stock from Lowe's is all you need.
No idea on where to buy the patch panels, but if you can install them, you should be capable of making your own, it's really not that hard to do.
I also agree with AX in that these are a reasonably easy patch to make on your own. Take the risk play with some donor metal and practice, form some metal.....you will not be disappointed and in the end you will build your self confidence and you will be ready for anything your project throws at you
I always highly recommend Ron Covell's video "Basic Techniques for Working with Steel" www.covell.biz as the best 40.00 anyone doing body work can spend.
I've seen that panel somewhere, Sac Vintage Ford, perhaps. Like everyone else said, just make your own. I've replaced that very same panel on my 48 with hardware store sheetmetal, and it was fairly easy. If the rolled edge at the very bottom is still intact, use that as a guide for the shape. If the bottom is completly gone, use the running board as a guide. Either way, it's a fairly simple shape. Butt weld the patch in, don't use an overlap joint there. That area catches alot of rain from the tires and an overlap there will likely rust out again. My fenders had been patched by a po with an overlap joint, which is why I had to do it again. Check the area where the upper fender bolts to the lower fender, you probably have rust there also. Same deal, buy patch panels for $75 each, or.....make your own.
