I've just rebuilt the 5.0 in my '91 F150 2wd. The AOD tranny seems to delay shifting until 2500, even at light throttle. Is this tranny home mechanic adjustable? I've heard rumor they will burn up within a couple hundred miles if not adjusted by a shop.
Ford has a specific tool and proceedure to set the throttle pressure. Ford specifies a "spacer block" that goes under the TV cable to raise the line pressure then (with the engine running) a line pressure gauge is used to monitor line pressure. You then use the cable adjustment to set line pressure to spec.
You can seat of the pants it if you set the shift speeds to about 12-14 mph for the 1-2 shift and 48 mph for the 3-4 shift.
If its shifting at too high an rpm then the cable is too tight. What usually burns up these transmissions is the cable being too loose and shifting too early. This will cause them to slip in OD. To tight and it won't shift to OD at all and it runs hot in 3rd gear.
E4OD's don't have TV cables. They are all electronic. The only cable it uses is the selector cable running from the shift lever to the selector on the side of the transmission.
