I have an 88 f-150 4x4 with a 5.0 and an AOD trans. it constantly clunks pretty hard when decelerating. my manual says that a C-4 or C-6 can be fixed by adjusting the bands. But, the Aod is a different kind of animal and the manual won't attempt to go into adjusting or fixing the problem? anyone know what the fix is? thaNKS
Is the clunk when slowing down do to the fact you are driving in overdrive around town , and when you let off the gas it shifts into overdrive with a clunk? I think it's common. I have the AOD. when I drive around town I keep it in drive.... locks it out of overdrive so it won't do this. Just use the OD for the highway. Also, there is a cable on the throttle body that goes to the tranny and determines the shift point, (sort of). If it's tightened up the shifts will be later, or at a higher RPM, but if it's too tight I think it tends to make the OD clunk more. No bands to adjust in the AOD. Just had mine rebuilt for the first time at 166,000.
thanks for your reply. i don't know too much about transmissions, but couldn't quite figure how that the c-6 and AOD could be that much different that one could be adjusted on the bands and one could not.
I guess i'll investigate further. that's all that my manual mentioned was the tv cable adjustment.Just thought that it was worth a try. the truck runs good and i just changed the trans fluid.
i also, just paid $1500 to have my son's trans rebuilt in his car. so, i want to avoid that again for awhile. ouch!
also, to answer your question, it clunks even when it's not in overdrive.
Ya, that's it. The TV cable. That's about all you can do. I lost 2nd gear in my AOD with a 302 behind it. Shifted first to third. Asked about bands to adjust when I got it rebuild and the reply was "there's nothing to adjust" I paid $1100 to get it rebuilt which included a torque converter. Had other quotes that were higher. Never heard of the clunk in the tranny before. Are you sure it's not the rest of the drive train? Drive shaft?
My 95 t-bird electric overdrive tranny went out at 66,000 miles and I was ****ed. They gold plated it for $1700.! Next truck is gonna be a stick shift!
yeah, i'm thinking maybe i should check out the rest of the driveline first. like the universals and something that i've heard mentioned, the slip joint?
it could possibly be something besides the transmission, i hope. thanks for your input and suggestions.
i can feel your pain when you mention the expense of transmission repair. a sharp pain in my pocket book.
