Hey guys im looking at buying a used 1994 F150 XLT Scab 4x4, i have to choose between two, one has the 302 and the other has the 351. How much have all you guys towed with the older (92-96) F150s and if the 1994s had any major problems and what your opinion is on that truck. Thanks
Able to tow large loads has more to do with the rear end then the engine.
A 302 with a 4.10:1 rear end will out tow a 351 with a 3.25:1 rear end.
A 351 with a 4.10:1 will tow the biggest load and so on.
The above is true with all of the above having the same transmission gearing.
Get the one you like .. I run nothing but 302 now. I just got rid of a 96 eb F150 4x4 reg cab short with 351 . My 302 w/MAF sc Long bed 4x4 would tow 24 ft car trailer right with the 351 except on long hills and the rest of week got 4 MPG more .I never got over 12 MPG on 351 even with complete tune up . But I'm not surprised its was the 6 th 351 F150 I had and the 6th I sold. I drive 500-600 mile a week and the mileage helps. So If you like the condition of the 302 get it.
i like the 351...i like the power the 351 has and i am most likey going to do some mods to the exhaust like edelbrock headers, magnaflow pipes with flowmaster super 40 series mufflers, and either a K&N or AEM CAI. But overall i like the 351 better, the 73 Mach 1 had a 351. But i would still like to hear what some of you guys are towing with a 94 or simaler year F150
