Question fuel pump whine

My F250 fuel pump just started whining. Is it going bad? The rear one started doing it about a year ago and I just ran it empty and quit using it.

So what do you guys preffer, two tanks that can send fuel back and forth, and like mine can decide what tank to read the fuel from, or just one?

My beater 95's rear tank is REALLY loud. When I bought it, it was the only one working, and who knows how long it's been that loud. I don't worry one bit about it. Like tgil said, that's why there's two.

Mine were noisy when I bought the truck used... eventually they both crapped out. I replaced both pumps and sending units... new ones are just as noisy. Maybe that's how they are?

You guys talking about the little weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee that you can hear sometimes when idling? Or is this a louder/more annoying noise you speak of? I only have one tank and my fuel pump makes a constant weeeeeeee sound, I never thought it was something to worry about. Also makes a short but similar and louder noise when I turn the key on halfway, I assume this is when the pump is priming.

Both of mine do it on my 96 F250. They have done it for over two years and I now never pull fuel to the empty mark before swithching. This way if the one quits with all the fuel in it I can still go back to the other tank!

They never use to whine. They sound like a bearing with a little slop in the race.

Mine don't whine at all...the pump is supposed to come on when you turn the key on though, I'm sure you know this I'm just stating it for those who don't know!

I have 94 ext cab...I hear the forward tank wurrrrrrrrrr'ing in between the bed and cab...it's done it for 2 years. I'll change it when it goes bad. To much of a pain to do it "just because"...

Well, I did some research, and if you have two tanks and replace only one pump this is not going to solve anything. Most vehicles you will have to replace both pumps because one pump runs off of the other. The other reasons is the fuel filter. Also you may have a pump that is in the tank and has been placed incorrectly so that is is up against the metal...to answer the question of the guy who said, "maybe thats how they are." NO I don't think when they came out with fuel pump they said...lets make them noisy to **** people off. Just being sarcastic to a ridiculous answer. Soemthing is the problem here and the pumps on my truck do not whine at all. Did you check your fuel pump relay?

I just sold my 90-f150 with 255,000 miles, the rear tank pump always was whining. I have had a 95-f150 for 6 monthe and the front pump whines. Never had any trouble out of either pump on either truck. The pump will quit when it goes bad, I suggest you drive on !!!
