ok so i have a 1996 ranger 2.3l 2wd, but it has 2spark plugs per cylinder. i dont know if their all like that but mine is. I live in washington and love to go rootin but have no clue what to do with my truck. Opinions?
like offroad-i dont really know what to do with it. i wanna put a cold air intakebut i dont know if they got them for my engine and i say a few guys on here had turbo charged their 2.3l but they didn't say how they did it. plus its 2wd and it likes to spin in the mud and has trouble getting traction
Easiest way to get power...swap engines. The 2.3L isn't an offroad machine, especially since it's a 2WD, and since you're spinning a lot, I'm betting you have an open differential. You have about the worst offroad combo in the Ranger.
Turbo 2.3Ls have been made before. Google "Ford 2.3 turbo" and quite a bit will come up. I know there have been countless posts on here. Check the turbo/supercharger forum as well as the four banger forum for more info as well.
Bob is spot on, for quick traction a factory LS is a good way to go. For reliable traction, go with a gear driven limited slip unit, since the clutches in the factory one will wear out. That being said, gear ones are much more expensive.
It's all about how much traction and power you want, and how much money you're willing to spend to achieve it.
A Detroit Tru-Trac clutchless limited slip is not that expensive, and as stated - no clutches to wear out. I just bought one for a little over $400 bucks from Rrider Racing. I'll be having it installed this Friday for about $250-$300 bucks.
Also, what rear end gearing do you have? Put a LS and some 4.10 gears in that Ranger and you'll have a totally different beast.
ford made plenty of 2.3 turbos, but i think they were 4 plug engines. 2.3 turbos were in thunderbird turbocoupes in the 80's. cool cars. your truck has 8 plugs and is normal for the rangers... you might be able to find some kind of turbo kit and make it work.. maybe one for a thunderbird will work. check it out... ask around. a 4x4 ranger would be better for muddin but i think your truck would be neat to turbo, lower, etc. its what i would do . if you still wanted to lift it and go offroad i dont think that 4 banger is peppy enough. i have a 91 STX 2.9/5 spd/ 4x4 right now, im in the process of putting a motor in it. i didnt know what the STX model was until about 30 minutes ago. aparently its a 2" oem lift with premium wheels and seats, lol.
And never drive it on the road again? Get a locker for the rear tires (not a limited slip, locker for sand), gear it extremely low (5.13 would be good), lift it six inches, put some 35s under it with the largest most open tread pattern you can find. That'll be a lot of fun in the sand until you get tired of lacking power. The four banger will struggle to move the truck and 35"s, even geared that much.
