This isnt about whish is better, I know the issues with both.
I just wanna know the differences between swapping either one into my '89, like what do I do with one that I wouldn't do with the other, different hook-ups, etc.I thought the two were externally the same.
I'm going to convert to manual glowplugs no matter which way I go. I might look ata an after-market water/fuel separater with built in filter and heater (I think its from Recon or something like that)
Now is the diesel/tranny combo longer than a 460/tranny combo (both 5-speed manual with 4x4).
Will I need custom cut legnth drive shafts and extend the transfercase selector linkages?
Just trying to get details before I'm waist deep in tear-down.
The best way to figure all that out is find a truck like your gasser that has a diesel in it.
If you have a regular cab truck, find a regular cab diesel.
250 or 350 does not make any difference, the frames are the same, wait a minute, they may not be the same.
Does your gasser have floating rear axles?
Is it a heavy duty or a light duty truck?
Park them side by side and spend a while with a tape measure checking them both out.
Do be aware that there are two models of ZF 5, the S 42 and the S 47.
The ID plate on both shold be on the drivers side just down from the shifter location.
Check what is in your gasser and what is in the diesel to make sure you are comparing apples to apples.

Thanks!
I just finished up a swap from a 460 to a 7.3L. The drive train is the same length basically a big block gas 460 cubic inch and a ZF5 vs a 445 cubic inch diesel and a ZF-5. The bell housing even looks similar 460 vs 7.3L but are not the same. The transmissions are the same length gas 4x4 to diesel 4x4, gas 4x2 to diesel 4x2 just different bell housings. The transfer case is the same B-W 1356.
