Shift Rod Removal?

What is the best way to remove the shift rod from the shift lever (on the steering column)? I have done it in the past but I can't seem to get this one off and separated from the grommet. Any tips?

I use a flat prybar that has a screwdriver handle.I put it between the rod and lever and twist.Hope this helps.

I use channel lock pliers
But
They make a special tool for this.

It is like leather punch.

There was a thread about this amonth ago or so.

Thanks. I was using different sizes of vise grips with no luck - thinking, "how did I do this before?". Prybar seems to ring a bell.
