well after busting my but changing a motor mount that i thought was causing a bad vibration turns out there is a problem with the trans...the truck is an 89 f350 drw 460 2wd c-6? or AOD (PRN(D)D1)...the truck has a terrible vibration from the start and pretty much undriveable...it worked better with the modulator disconnect so i replaced it with a new one with no improvement...with the mod disconnected i can drive it by starting in 1 and then shifting it to D and (D) does not work...if i stop i have to start in 1 again...sometimes it shutters a bit but it works....what could be the problem? if i need a new trans, where can i buy a heavy duty trans?
In 89 you could get an e4od or a c-6. Since you say that you unhooked the vac. modulator, I would say that you have the c-6. First I would check the fluid and make sure it is full, looks red, and does not have a burnt smell to it. If all of that checks out then drop the pan and check for metal. If it is full of metal then I would suspect an internal problem. With the vac. mod. hooked up will the truck shift or does it stay in first? Make sure that the vac. line did not come unhooked at the intake.
i always thought it was a c6 but i saw a thread showing my dash config was an AOD...fluid is in pretty good shape and level (mobil 1) changed maybe a year or so ago... when the vac mod was connected the fluid was bubbly on the stick...when i get time ill drop the pan for a visual inspection...with the vac mod connected the truck would shutter like hell and after a lot of feathering of the throttle i think it i could get up some speed and second gear but i cant remember for sure
1980/89 Ford Light Truck Parts Catalog shows two Automatic Transmissions for an 1989 F350 with a 460. C-6 or E4OD (NO AOD's listed). C6's use a modulator valve, E4OD's do not. There are two different modulator valves used for 1989 C6's with a 460.
