I am currently getting ready to have a 20'x30' shop building put up. I want to put down some kind of floor covering that would be tough enough to use a floor jack and jack stands on. Ive heard of epoxy coatings that are tough and durable. What kind should I use and can I get something like this from Home Depot or Lowes?
Oh yeah, I have been helping teaching a machine shop class up until recently. I know about the cutting fluid and way oil on the floor. The shop had an epoxy coating on it but the instructor said he didnt know alot about it. I know it was very tough, you couldnt gouge or scratch it.
Just use a concrete sealer. Home Depot has UGL oil base sealer for $13/gallon that covers 3-400sf. It can also be used on moist concrete to help cure. Says it is OK for interior flat surfaces but must be well ventilated. 2 gallons would cover your floor. Even the best epoxy will chip and scratch under jacks and equipment. Then it looks ugly.
I went by Sherwin Williams today and they told me about their HS1000 2 part epoxy. It is about 124.00 for the kit that makes 2 gallons and should cover about 300 sq.ft. per gallon. Also the epoxy primer is about 74.00 for the 2 part kit and should cover the same. A local trucking company covered their shop floor with this kit, I am going by there and see what it looks like and see how it is holding up. My shop wont have near the traffic and stress that their shop has. Any thoughts on the HS 1000 kit from SW?
Ucoat-it makes an incredible floor coating. It costs about $267 to do a 24x24 area. They used this coating on several buildings at the Carlisle fairgrounds in PA, and after about 5 + years of abuse, the floor still looks good, except for some scratches. I'm going to do a portion of my garage with it. It's not cheap, but it beats having to do it twice.
I used the Home Depot epoxy system (by Behr paints), and love it. As for the jack and jack stands chipping the floor, all you need to do is use several samll pieces of 3/4 inch plywood under the stands and jack and you're good to go. The floor is definitely tough. Easy to clean. Wish I had done it in my previous homes.
any more suggestions? I'm looking at doing my garage soon....and i do NOT plan on skim coating it, so the concrete floor (where it's rough) will just be rough when i'm done.
