1979 460 starter issues

Hello to all ford lovers.I have a 460 in my 1979 f-150, and lately it has been eating starters, 5 to be exact. after inspection fly wheel seems in good shape, and i even tried shimming in 2 instances.I am pretty sure i have the right starters and when i first install they work fine for about 5 to 10 starts, but after that they start grinding and binding. If anybody can offer some advice i would be very grateful,thanking you in advance. Newwavedave!

Did you count the # of teeth on the original one ? This has been discused before here. I thing the outcome was some had 10 and some had 11 or something like that.

I had no clue that there was a different tooth count i will count them. My next question would be what is the cirrect # of teeth for a 460 engine?

The flexplate/flywheel should have 164 teeth.

You might try a different rebuilder if you haven't done so already.

Thank you for the info Matt, i was actually refering to the # of teeth on the starter itself.Do you know how many teeth should be on the starter gear? Thanking you in advance.

There should be 10 teeth on the starter.
