t18 shifter removal

I have installed a t18 4 speed replacing my old 3 speed in my 80 f100.
I got a good deal on it but... the kid I bought it from sawed about a foot off the shifter handle and had a hurst shifter handle glued on the shaft.

Is there any problems I might face removing the shift handle to replace it or to weld a longer shaft back on? I heard you should have it parked on level surface so the gears don't slip back when you remove the shifter. Also is all I have to do to remove it is unscrew the cup, remove the washer and spring, and then remove the pin on the side then lift up and out? I'm am really nervous about doing this.

The only time you have to worry about gears sliding is if your pulling off the cover. It is easy to remove the lever have no fears.

Thanks, with all the work of installing the 4 speed and having a driveshaft built I didn't
want to screw it up.

No need to remove the tower to remove the lever, the lever doesn't come off that way.

Put gearshift in neutral. Unscrew the cap that holds the shift lever into the tower. Remove the lever. That's all there is to it.

The cap fits over the lever, just above the tower. Screwing it off/on is how the lever is held in place
