I'm trying to remove rear axle from 2001 F-150. There is a pin that needs to be removed and is done so by first removing the 10mm head threaded pin that goes into that. When I tried removing this pin, I broke off the 10mm head and some or all of the threads. How do I remove the remainder of the pin? Anyone got any good tricks? Thanks for the help. Tom
I'm not real familiar with the F150's but don't you have an 8.8 semi-floater? The same thing happened to me on my BII (7.5 semifloater). I found a little kit from skyway tools put together for just that eventuallity. I looked at their kit, then assembled the individual pieces ("easy outs", long skinny drill bit). My broken "pinion shaft lock bolt" came out in just a few minutes.
that is the only thing that holds the cross pin in. Without being able to remove that bolt the crosspin will not come out, and the c-clips can't come off, so the axles will never come out.
How much of the threaded part is still in the carrier?
I have seen guys drill out the carrier to eliminate the threads, and remove the bolt with an easy out. Difficult to reach with a standard drill, but can be done, then fix threaded hole once removed.
Short of putting the cover back on, and putting a for sale sign on the truck, you have a bit of work ahead of you. Probably gonna swear a little, might even make up a few words, but either way, it aint gonna be easy.
Because every one of these is a little bit different, there really is no magic way to remove them, it will just take a bunch of time, or a torch. I feel bad for you.
Good luck with it man, I hate it when that happens.
