Question Using LSD in a 08 6.4 designed for ULSD

I am considering purchasing the new 08 PSD, but this summer I have a vacation planned to Mexico. As far as my research has gone I have found that there may not be ULSD where I plan on visiting, does anyone know if there is a problem with using LSD in the 6.4 intended for ULSD?
I have asked the sales and mechanics at my local dealer, and they are clueless for a solid answer.

As far as I know using the LSD in the 6.4 will cause damage to the fuel system, emmisions system, and possibly the engine. I would not do it.

The 6.0 can run either LSD or ULSD without any issue.

That's my understanding as well. When Edmund's did their writeup on the new '08 they had this to say....

"A few years ago, the diesel community was up in arms over the stringency of the upcoming emissions standards, which threatened to be the death knell of diesel. Ford addressed these concerns with an oxidation catalyst, particulate filter and a precise fueling strategy. Together, these measures are instrumental in making the PowerStroke turbodiesel stinkless.

The caveat is that these emissions control devices require ultralow-sulfur diesel (ULSD) fuel in order to remain healthy. The EPA reports that 85-90 percent of the diesel pumps in the U.S. currently dispense ULSD, and those pumps must carry a sticker saying so. There's no guarantee, however, that the dusty pump in the middle of nowhere dispenses ULSD
."

Yep, as far as I know all diesel suppliers started shipping ULSD to all on road fueling stations in October or somewhere around there. That is just in the US though, no idea what they are doing down in Mexico.

And just so you know it's not just Ford. The Duramax and Cummins motors built after Jan 1 2007 have to have ULSD too. Actually I beleive all on road diesel engines built after 1/1/07 have to.

From what I understand it will screw up the particulate filter system. I also have heard there is some sort of kit you can fit to the 6.4 for situations like yours. Maybe the 6.4 forum or deiselstop.com might be able to privide some firsthand information.

This is from the 2008 6.4PSD diesel supplement manual.

FUEL REQUIREMENTS - CHOOSING THE RIGHT FUEL: VEHICLES
OPERATED WHERE ULTRA LOW SULFUR DIESEL FUEL IS
REQUIRED (UNITED STATES/CANADA/PUERTO RICO/U.S. VIRGIN
ISLANDS AND OTHER LOCALES)
Use only Ultra Low Sulfur (15 ppm Sulfur Maximum) number 1-D
or 2-D diesel fuel in your 6.0L or 6.4L diesel engine. The engine
and exhaust system were designed to only use this fuel. Look for the
ULTRA-LOW SULFUR HIGHWAY DIESEL FUEL (15 ppm Sulfur
Maximum) label on fuel pumps when purchasing your fuel.
Using low sulfur diesel fuel (16-500 ppm) or high sulfur diesel
fuel (greater than 500 ppm) in a 6.4L diesel engine designed to
use only Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel fuel will cause certain emission
components to malfunction which may also cause the Check
Engine ( ) light to illuminate indicating an emissions-related
concern.
Number 1-D or winter blend number 2-D fuel is recommended at
temperatures below 20°F (-7°C) (see Cold weather operation in the
Driving chapter of this supplement). Diesel fuel containing no more
than 5% biodiesel may be used. Use of biodiesel in concentrations
greater than 5% may cause damage to your vehicles fuel system
components such as fuel tank, fuel lines, fuel pump, fuel sender and fuel
injectors. Concentrations greater than 5% can also cause fuel filter
restrictions that may result in a lack of power and or fuel pump and fuel
injector failure.
Biodiesel fuel is a product that has been converted from renewable fuel
sources, including vegetable oil, animal fat and cooking oil. Raw or
refined vegetable oil, animal fat, cooking oil or recycled greases should
not be used.
Do not use home heating oil, agricultural fuel or any diesel fuel
not intended for highway use. Damage to the fuel injection
system, engine and exhaust catalyst can occur if an improper fuel
is used. Do not add gasoline, gasohol or alcohol to diesel fuel.
This practice creates a serious fire hazard and engine
performance problems.

FUEL REQUIREMENTS - CHOOSING THE RIGHT FUEL: VEHICLES
OPERATED WHERE ULTRA LOW SULFUR DIESEL FUEL IS NOT
REQUIRED
For a 6.4L engine to operate reliably on low sulfur or high sulfur diesel
fuel, the 6.4L engine must be a high sulfur configured engine or a ULSD
fuel-configured engine that has been retrofitted for high sulfur diesel fuel
use.
Use only a 6.4L diesel engine that has been configured for use
with high sulfur diesel fuel in markets with diesel fuel that has
sulfur content greater than 15 ppm. Using low sulfur diesel fuel
(16–500 ppm) or high sulfur diesel fuel (greater than 500 ppm) in
a 6.4L diesel engine designed to use only Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel
fuel increases the likelihood of engine oil dilution with fuel which
may lead to major engine damage. Engine damage from using the
improper type of fuel is not covered under your warranty."

Sounds like I need to go to Mexico and buy my next truck so that I can get one without all of the new emisions garbage . Even though they probably won't sell too many down there as a new SD costs more than all the homes (huts) in most cities.

I heard in the 6.4L forum that it was ok for occassional use. That it would just cause more regen cycles to clean out the DPF.

I wouldnt drive my new $60,000 truck down there anyways. The drivers are scary and theres a good chance its gonna get stolen.

I knew someone would bring that up.

In some drivers, it improves driving ability!
