1966 F-100 with 3spd on the tree, 3.25 gear. Our there different colored gears, at the end of the cable, for the transmission peice? I got one out of the J-yard and it was in a manuel truck that had been converted to an auto. I figured they may not have swapped the cable for one for an auto trans. so I snagged it. But it seems I'm running faster than the speedo says. It has a red gear on it.
15" tires? And what sized engine? Gears go by tooth count. To determine which gear is correct, I need engine and tire size. Truck as a 3 speed stick, right?
Answer the Q's about tire and engine size, I'll give you the correct gear tooth number and part number. The gears are easy to find, Ford still uses them.
You can't just stick something in there, the gears have different rotations, and there are about 30 different ones, depending on application.
I figured that was the case. Motor-360 and 15" tires. The 360 is from a '70 model F-100, and the 3-speed stick is the original one as far as I can determine.
FTE sponsor y2kfordparts has them in stock for a discount price below the list.
Note: Parts catalog doesn't show P-metric tire sizes (printed long before metric tires were used here in the US), so I went with the largest 15" tire used then.
Frank, I think a tooth count is worth about 5 mph, so if your speedo is off by 10 mph you need two teeth difference. The tranny drive gear can effect where your are on the count as well.
Bill should be able to tell you for sure but I know the tooth count goes from 16T to 22T. You also need to be aware of twist most use a rt hand twist / and some use a lft hand twist \.
Thanks guys! I'll have to check tomorrow and see which gear I have, I did not check it, I just plugged it in. Me and the wifey are going to do a side-by-side comparo with her car to see how off it is. I could get the neighbor who is a sherriff to just hit me with his lazer to, might be more accurate?

Gears are usually 5-7 MPH between tooth count, so add teeth if fast, or subtract teeth if slow.
Another way to check is to utilize the mile markers on a reasonably straight and level stretch of highway, and a watch. 60MPH should equal one minute exactly between markers. Wife can stay home and cook dinner that way. /s

I did this today and came up with 72 mph and the speedo read 60 mph. So I guess I'm 12 MPH off at 60!
