First off I would like great forum. I fixed all my five of my door lock acuators for only pennies from info on this site instead of buying new ones. I bought a 2000 X that had a blown V10 and the tranny was not working right. I swaped in a 1997 cummins and Dodge tranny. My question is can I swap a cluster from a diesel X or Superduty? Will it plug in and work?
I don't think you'll have all the correct inputs for the lights & gauges you mention though. They take all the info from the PCM. That 97 Cummins won't "talk" to the Ford gauge cluster. What are you using as a Powertrain Control Module?
I am using the PCM from the Dodge to control the engine and tranny and I am using the PCM on the Ford to control everything else. The coolant temp gauge registers, but does not go up as far as it should. I still have to check to see if the thermostat is working properly. the oil pressure gauge is working, voltage gauge works. I was hoping that I could find the wires post Ford PCM that feed the cluster lights and get my Dodge PCM to fire up the indicator lights. I was told from a company that does these types of conversions that if I had a diesel cluster they could send me a toner wheel and get my tach to work.
What on the engine is controlled by the PCM? I thought the 97s had the inline pump and were controlled mechanically. According to the wiring diagram the instrument panel get a signal from a "temperature sensor #2" but also gets a temperature signal from the PCM. Keep us up to date on the conversion.
jmhauke you are right, the engine is not controlled by the PCM at all. Its all mechanical. It sends some messages to the PCM, but is not controlled by it. Does anyone know if the connector on the back of the gas cluster is the same as the diesel cluster?
Hammily ... from my experience with clusters and swaps a lot of the time the sockets and indicators are already there in the clusters for like vehicles. If you've got your cluster out take the bulbs out and use a flashlight to see what's there. You might find that you already have the spots for the diesel lamps but they just aren't being used. Then you could just wire a bulb or LED into where you want.
Oh BTW ... pics brother .. we need pics!!! ... LOL
Oh one other thing .... get yourself a EVTM for the Excursion and the vehicle the Cummins came out of. Those little jewels make wiring and swaps sooooo much easier. Someone on here had a link where you can download a version for free.... Think it was CudaJim. Good luck.
