Allen Supercharger
I've been looking at supercharging my 97 5.4 4x2 373 rear, I like the Allen supercharger. http://www.troyerperformance.com/cgi-bin/ppistore.pl?user_action=detail&catalogno=AED98FE54 Does anybody have one? Is there any negatives for this unit beside cost? This truck will never be at the track (I dont think it will anyway). It's a daily driver and some times pulls a boat and small trailer. I did not find many positive-displacement blowers for my truck. I did find alot of centrifugal superchargers. I think I would like the boost at low rpm's. I did find one on ebay for a 2000 5.4. I dont think it will work thought. Any info on this unit or similar superchargers would be great. Thanks Norm
Decent torque numbers, but HP numbers aren't great.
IMHO you can expect about 350 lb-ft of torque, and about 245 RWHP based on the few dyno results I've seen for similar setups..maybe a bit more HP with a great tune.
But if you want a roots blower for your truck, I think that's the only choice available...KB doesn't offer a blower for your truck anymore.
I not completely sold on a roots, I have been also looking at Procharger. I know you like yours (I seen alot of your replys). At what rpm do you feel the boost coming on (2000, 2500 3000)? I know I wont be changing my rear grear. At $4000. I would like to get the best all around performance. I like the 8 to 9lbs of boost for Procharger (5.5lbs for Allen). The ad also said no upgrade for more boost with the Allen.
My boost gauge isn't hooked up right now but I typically see boost starting at 2000 (very little), a few psi by 2500, and a pretty fast buildup from there on up to the shift point.
I've got a 9psi blower, but with my low-restriction intake I see 10.5psi.
To be honest, most folks prefer the instant power delivery of a roots or twin-screw. I think this is because they aren't used to revving their trucks...and the NPI 5.4 doesn't like to rev in stock trim.
The way I see it, the Procharger gives me a whole new level of power where none exsted before: beyond 3,000 rpm.
I understand that most folks dont like to rev high. I'm 45 now and I dont rev my engine much above 5000 very often. Maybe once in a while. I go to work about 5:00 am every morming and I play with a Dodge diesel every once in a while (Its real strong). After your reply I think maybe a roots will work best for my daily driver. I do like the fact of having full boost at 2000 rpm's. My dad loan me a 2003 F150 4.6 4x2 308 gear (dog but better mpg) to use till my has been repaired. I have been watching my rpm's the last week few weeks alot to see the what the normal range is. Its pretty low. I dont think it went above 4000 at all. Most of the time 2000 to 3500. I do run mine a bit harder though. May be a roots is the best for me. I understand that the M90 is over driven, but I did not see many any other's (roots/screw) out their. Do you?
If you were buying a supercharger again, would wou still go procharger? Do you rev high often? Or would you want more torque at lower rpm's?
Thanks for your input. Norm

The power from 3000rpm to 4000rpm is great - where I see about 6 - 7 psi. I make 410 lb-ft of torque at about 3200rpm. And from 4000rpm to 5000rpm it pulls like a train. My shift point is right at 5100rpm.
The Allen kit will feel very strong, just keep your expectations in check.
And like Johnny says, it's a nice, complete kit, well made.
Unless you can find someone with a Kenne Bell kit that's leftover, or used, I think the Allen is all there is for a roots blower.

Its sounds like your are very happy with your setup.
I don't think their will be much luck in finding a leftover Kenne Bell. Maybe used, but I'm not sure about buying a used system. I would have to be very careful doing that.
Thank's for your help. Norm
