A/C is basically always on, what the hell?

My 08 Lariat's CCS works great when it's working. Right now my A/C shut off, so my compressor doesn't even kick on. However, when it was working properly, it didn't throw the fan on full blast like my wife's Edge does when she lets it go full-auto.

I live in So Cal and this is one of the thing i dislike about my truck. On vent only, the truck blows air into the cabin that is at least 10-15 degrees warmer than the outside air temp. It forces you to have the AC on which then it gets to cold in the cab so you raise the temp.. I just crack my windows and it managable but I wish the air only vent blew air that was closer to the outside air temp. Sounds like the air on doesn't effect that much MPG. Is that true?
