I bought an 03 Ranger Edge (supercab, 3.0L, 2wd auto) yesterday with 62,200KMs, its in beautiful shape theres not a scratch on it. I'm just wondering what sort of maintenance I should do to it when I get. Anything in particular I should watch out for? Also, I have heard that there is a flex fuel version of the engine, how can I tell if I have that?
Thanks guys

As far as I know the flex fuel version has a decal/placard on it declaring it. Either FF or Flex fuel. Should say so on the gas cap.
Maintenance? What's the oil color like? Change the fuel filter if it doesn't look pristine. Pull the wheels and inspect the brakes. Check air filter. Get air conditioning checked/topped up. Change tranny filter, flush and fluid. Shampoo engine and put curlers on the roof, hee hee. Carefully check plug gaps. Flush and replace coolant.
All this stuff is about due for this truck and you can usually bet the previous owner put it off because he was selling it.
Absolutely use motorcraft plugs. I tried some bosch plugs and they were horrible. A total waste of money. I went back to the motorcraft plugs and have not had a problem since. I have 103,000 miles on my 2002 Ranger Tremor
Good call on the Motorcraft plugs, and usually they're cheaper!
The other thing I strongly recommend is pulling the front wheels and repacking your wheel bearings. For some reason, I've always been a stickler for wheel bearings and U-joints...but I've never had any failures...and I've owned three Rangers. I wish I had kept one of them for simple 'little' runs. I've got a 150 and a 250 now. I used to kid around and tell folks that I was using Miracle-Grow on the Ranger so I could get my Super Duty...LOL.
let's see.. 62,000 KM.. thats about.. what 45,000 miles?
Probably want to do a good all-around on the maintenance stuff:
-Change Oil/Filter
-Change FUEL Filter
-Change Transmission fluid
-Change Engine Coolant
-Change Differential Oil
-Check and Change Air filter if dirty
-Do a good, thorough inspection of the brakes, ball joints, and wheel bearings. Might want to go ahead and repack the front bearings, and clean/adjust the rear brakes (should be about 50-60% worn at this point)
-Replace the broken Stabilizer links (this is about the time mine broke)
-Might want to put plugs in it, but really probably not necessary at this time.
-Lower the spare tire.. air it up.. flip it over (so you can air it up from the bottom next time)... put some lithium grease on the cable and raise it back up.
Check under the hood for squirrels!!!
Pulling the bedliner, cleaning and wax or oil guard the bed and reinstall. Armour all the rubber door seals. Dash tooo. Load test the battery. Shampoo the engine (you can get some from dealer). Re torque lug nuts ( a little grease on the threads help keep em good). Check fuse box to make sure you have spares. Program a couple of new keys while you still have two.
Thanks for all the tips guys, I definatly will be changing all the fluids and gapping the plugs as soon as i get the truck. I talked to the owner and it needed new pads to pass the safety so those are taken care of. Now I just have to wait to get the truck. (The owner wasn't finished paying it off yet and there was a lean on it, so I'm going to wait for confirmation from ford that its all paid for before I go ahead and pay him, and that could take up to 10 days ). Also, fflinstone good tip on removing the bedliner and putting oilgaurd or wax under there. It looks like it has a factory installed liner as it looks like it goes in underneath the bed rails, how do I get that thing out or should I leave it to the pros?

realize that changing one of the rear plugs is... a pain. easiest done if the engine were removed. not that i recommend removing it. just trying to impresse the difficulties of changint them. unless they fixed that after 97.
Speaking of Wendell, we haven't heard from the old fella lately. Must be on vacation. Lucky so and so. I could start a ' Where's Wendell 'thread, but I think I'll hold off. I remember he started a 'Where's Monsterbaby thread' that ended well. lol. Maintenance always brings you closer to your tuck!!!!!
