I Used My 97 Diesel To Tow About 2 Tons Of Landscape Rock, And Ever Since The Overdrive Light Comes On By Itself Even Thow I Haven't Pushed The Button In. I Know It Is Not Out Of Overdrive, Because It Shifts Through All The Gears. I CAN MAKE THE LIGHT GO OFF BY SHIFTING INTO PARK, THEN BACK INTO DRIVE Any Thoughts, Sounds Like A Short Inside The Shifting Column? Thanks Jcab
I have encountered it in my expy, my f150, and now my psd...they all had a broken wire where it comes out of the shift shaft. With a little patience and a sodering iron you can fix it yourself, or spend the 90 bucks for a new assembly from a stealership..
SCAN FOR CODES IS THE ONLY THING THAT COMES TO MIND if the broken wire is not your problem, IF GOTTEN THE LIGHT TO FLASH WHEN I over rev an E-series while in 1st gear. That was fun times.
Does the OD light stay on solid, or is it flashing on and off?
If it's flashing on and off, it might be your CPS needs replacing. Check the codes as suggested by DAVID'S97F250HD.
Good news though, if the CPS is the problem. I verified with my local dealership and, as of today, a new CPS is available for the 7.3-liter DIT. It retails for around $25. The bad news is, my dealership hasn't received a shipment yet.
Do a search on "CPS" and I'm sure you'll find the thread with the part number. It was posted within the past week or two.
The light stays on solid, not out of overdrive, and no power or driving acceleration problems. Thanks Jcab

I think your right, but how do I remove shift shaft to repair? Thanks Jcab

Take out the 4 screws on the bottom of the column. one is tricky and should prolly remove the right side column lower dash, but it can be done without doing that by taking out the 3 screws on the bottom and pulling the column cover enough to get to the screw. You have to put the key in the ignition an turn it to run position. There is a "ball on the bottom of the key ignition assembly. Press it in and pull out the key and the tumbler. From there just tap out the pin on the base of the shift shaft and you can see right where the wires plug in. pull the cap off of the shifter and buzz out the wires..use a process of elimination, or you might be able to see what wires are broken...at any rate just buzz them out to make sure..this can be done with virtually any volt meter..get some small heat shrink, cut the wire and put heat shrink on, solder it up and slide heat shrink over soldered joint..boom you are done..plug it back in and reassemble it....thats how I did it anyways...on the Newer F150's and Expy's the od wire plugs in up under the dash further. Good luck.
I can jiggle shift column where overdrive light is, and can make the light come on. So something is loose in there. Thanks Jcab
