Anyone ever run across a problem , when normally after turning a corner the steering UH, jerks from side to the other, ulmost like pulsing. Bad enough so at 40 MPH it is almost impossible to stay in the lane?
I'm thinking something like CV joint. Just had new wheel bearings and ball joints added. Truck is a 2000 with 104,000 miles.
Scary feeling, got the truck home Ok, and after turning a couple of corners it for the most part let up to the point where there was just a hint of the feeling left in the wheel.
Felt like someone was grabbing the wheel and steering it left and then right..
Thanks for any info.. headed for the shop in the morning..
If this is only on bumps i'd start with the steering stabalizer shock. The one sitting sideways in front of he front axle. (you are 4WD right?) That is there for no reason but to dampen the steering from shaking back and forth over bumps.
Or are you just driving on a smooth road and steering around a trun and it snaps back the other way? Thats pretty crazy if thats whats happening! Your truck has a U-Joint in the front axle not a CV Joint. I honestly have no idea what it could be if tahts whats happening, maybe something in the steering box is shot?
It does not seem to have anything to do with hitting bumps, when it does this it is normally after making a turn. It does not do it all the time either. I am waiting to see one front wheel point east and the other west.
I just took it down the road and it drove for the most part fine. A little hint of "looseness" but no demonic actions like it had earlier today...
I will see what the shop can come up with in the morning
Make sure there's grease in your new ball joints. I just had mine replaced and no grease was added to them. You might also have the adjustment checked in the steering box; either by yourself (see posts about wandering steering) or, as I would advise, have an expert adjust it. Good luck.
I had to have the truck towed in this morning. I tried to drive it to the shop made it about 500 yards and had to give up.
I just had new wheel bearings install, the front end inspected for anything that was wrong or might be wrong as I just made a round trip towing a trailer from NY to FL. Luckily none of this happened on the trip, but at the same time they did not see any problem with the front end at that time either.
So it is at the shop now, and I have yet to hear anything from them.. which I am taking not to be a good thing.. like they have not figured out the problem yet.
Well it went from one shop to the dealers today. The shop checked everything they could think of and now they are thinking it is in the front diff. or front drive line somewhere. So they being stumped told me to come get it and take to the dealer. So I did, drove just fine once again for the 3/4 mile to the dealership...
More to come....
Just picked the truck up from the dealer. They said the front Right wheel was so bound up they could not rotate it by hand.. ( hope this means the MPG will pick back up)
They replaced the universal joint on that side, the CB seals. Total bill came to $262
Warranty covered almost half of it.
The tech said it started doing it with him.. said we were right it was Possessed the wheel started going from 9 oclock to 3 oclock...
