What componant is going out or is bad, if going up a hill say 6% grade my 460 in a 89' f250 starts pinging really bad as if my timing was not correct(which it is
good) and im not towing anything, this also applies at hwy speeds and i start up
an incline (hill).
Your fuel has gone bad. That would be my first guess. If you've been traveling or they now have "summer fuel" where you live, the octane may not be what you need, along with the fact that spring is here and your truck will be running a little hotter. It doesn't take much heat to make some of those engines ping. I NEVER run 87 octane in anything I own. My 94 lumina pings on 87 octane sold locally thanks to re-formulated gas. Try moving up one grade of fuel on your next fill-up. By the way, you don't gain anything by using fuel with more octane than what your engine needs. If it pings on 87 octane but not on 89 octane, you won't gain anything by using 93 octane.
If your truck doesn't run right on 87 octane, something is wrong. If you're sure your timing is set right, then the pinging could be from a plugged up EGR valve that's stuck open or from carbon deposits on the valves. Those are the two most common causes.
My '88 F-150 did the same thing and progressivley got worse. I did a full tune-up and the pinging went away. I'm not saying this is your problem, but a tune-up worked for me.
Let me explain what I mean by bad fuel. Where I live, we have what they call summer fuel which is sold in the 3 most northern counties in Ky. While the gas vehicles I own are suppose to run on 87 octane fuel, they will ping on it in the summer. If I use 89 octane, the pinging goes away. Also, if I go south, out of the three counties and get fuel, 87 octane will not cause any of them to ping. This has been my experience, as well as a few friends I have. Perhaps all you need is a tune-up, or your EGR valve is bad, I don't know. But with me, it was the fuel. (I also got worse mileage on the summer fuel, also known as re-formulated fuel)
Well that makes sense campspringsjohn but thats not making a diff in my case.
Guess im just gonna have to get dirty and check that EGR and a couple other things
Darn, back yard mechanic here I come truck whatch out. Thanks guy's, and if anyone
