I need your input >>
History:
1966 f 100 has been in the family since 1968. Truck is original and I know it like the back of my hand. obvious no repaints.
VIN: F10AK760538.
wheel base : 129
color: 5M - (???? /wimbol White)
Model: F100
Body: E81
Trans: co8
GVW: 0500 129hp 4,000rpm made in Ooctober 65 at K.C.
I have called Ford and their records stop at 1967. Went to the body shop pulled the old chip books and found that the trucks red is an exact match to paint code number 5 signal flare red found on the 1966 ford mustang. Matched paint areas that have not been subject to the elements (inside doors etc). This paint code 5 for the mustang is the same code on my vin id for paint 5M. I'm assuming that the origninal owner special ordered the truck paint code 5 signal flare red with the standard wimb white.
For you ford truck historians: Was it possible to special order a truck with mustang paint?
I'm in the middle of a frame off resto. Truck will be a daily driver. It will not be a trailer queen, but I would like to enter it in some shows just for fun and want the truck to be correct. I don't want to try to defend this paint job the rest of my life.
I know there are alot of guys that know the history of these trucks and I respect your opinions greatly. You have been a huge help during this restoration. Chime in and let me know what you think!!
So.....would you guys go with the standard 1966 ford truck rangoon red or assume that this truck was special ordered and paint it with the matching code 5 signal flare paint? (somewhat of a orange hue).
thx.

I have called Ford and their records stop at 1967. Sounds fishy to me, if you asked for 67 colors, they'd prolly tell you their records only go back as far as 1968. Went to the body shop pulled the old chip books and found that the trucks red is an exact match to paint code number 5 signal flare red found on the 1966 ford mustang. Or it was a springtime color, and is not listed under the truck color charts...that happened a lot back then.
For you ford truck historians: Was it possible to special order a truck with mustang paint? YOU BET !

Not many, just the hard core fanatics.
Mustang nuts will prolly recognize the color, after that...very few.

If you like the Rangoon Red, go with that color, If you like the Signal Flare Red, go with that. BUT...In 1966 Ford also offered Candy Apple Red on Mustangs and Birds. Candy Apple Red would look better than Signal Flare Red, but that's JMO.
Many trucks have been modified. Powertrains swapped, chrome wheels added, trim added, interior redone with leather. In the past 20 years I've seen exactly 3 1965/72 trucks restored to factory specs, or all original and mint at car shows around the SoCal area. One is mine, a friend owns the minty 1971 Ranger XLT with 43,000 miles (factory original colors = lemon and lime!). The other truck is owned by a Mustang fanatic. There's also a couple of 65's owned by Shelby GT 350 nuts and modeled after the work trucks Carroll Shelby had. White with blue racing stripes.
