5M Paint Code

How Rare is the 5M Paint code anyone have any idea?

Is the correct color name poppy red or signal flare red?

Looks orange to me. Not as orange as the calypso coral on my boss but very similar.

Found some interesting grease pencil markings showing paint code on bottom side of hood and also on front of bed behind cab. A few other markings I would be curious as to what they are.

What year is this?

M can be either Wimbledon White (1964 and later-off white) or Colonial White (thru 1963-pure white).

5 = A springtime introduction color. What color izit? What year izit?

Ford confusion: 5 could be the code for one color one year (example: 1965 = 5 = Dark Turquoise Metallic), a different color the next.

Signal Flare Red was used on trucks in 1969 (Code Z).

btw: The only other 5 code I could find is for Vintage Burgandy, used on 1965 trucks sold in Canada.

Are you sure its 5M, and not SM?

Thanks Bill,

Its for sure a 5M

Its the truck I just started to restore & in Projects Section

1966 F100 Short Bed Custom Cab

Its an all original unrestored truck including original paint etc.

Door Tag Info

F10BD766429 66-429 vin ! WISH IT WERE 66-427

115 5M F100 E81 G 08

05000 150 3600 75

Written with grease pencil on bottom side of hood drivers side front corner it says 2tone then 5M

Firewall says Dash Radio

Front of bed also says 2tone 5M in grease pencil.

I am aware of only 1 other 66 F100 with the 5M paint code.

This truck was bought new in Phoenix where I bought it from friend of mine who bought it from original 80+ yr old lady who bought it new.

Looks similar in color to my paint code 1 (70 Boss 302) but not quite as orange.

Appears to be same as supposed 66 Mustang only color and special ordered. Its for sure wimbleton white.

In my literature I could not find the code 5 For 66 F series thats why I was asking.

Be happy to post some pics of grease pencil markings and or door tag.

My dad bought a new 66 F100 in October 65 (which he gave to me & what I learned to drive in) and it was a lot more red

Was the trans cooler std (engine coolant) on the F100's or just a 300-6 option or std equip with the 300? Curious as had not seen one before and with metal lines and mounting looks factory. This truck also had what looks like a dealer installed A/C (underdash) (partially removed when I got it)

Boss9F100...I see in your p/file that you are in Wa...what part as I am there too...let me know as Id love to see your truck if you are on the same side of mountains as I am...let me know...

Ive never heard of or seen a number in a truck paint code...but ND would be the one who know best most likely about such things as he posted above...an incredible wealth of knowlege information :-)

Feel free to stop by any time. I am complete opposite side of state. in spkn

Does seem ND is super sharp on these trucks and was hoping he would chime in.

I have heard of 1 other 5M but never actually physically seen the truck.

I am almost finished with the carts so I can get back to work on the truck sometime today.

Your dad bought a new 1966 in 10/65, the Big Dummy bought a new 1965 F100 in March 1965, and still has it.

A trans cooler would have been an option, even on Camper Specials, but I doubt it's Gen-U-Ine Ford unless it was installed later.

Ford didn't offer an external trans cooler till 1969:

C9AZ-7K177-A .. Trans Cooler-Hi Capacity

Dealer installed A/C: The 1963/64 Select-Aire from a Galaxie could have been installed as well as the dealer installed Rotunda A/C, available for all the cars/trucks thru 1966.

I had the dealer (Stockton Quincy Ford in Westwood-I worked there) add A/C on mine in 1965, an underdash unit sold (aftermarket) by Air-Cold Sales: Climactic Air.

When I did a frame off resto in 1981/83, I added a NOS Galaxie Select-Aire setup I found in a junkyard.

Yes...I said a junkyard, want one? There may be a few left.

EDIT: I looked in both the 1965/72 car & 1964/72 truck parts catalogs, and "The Standard Catalog of Light Duty Ford Trucks" (Xlnt ref source from krause.com) for the 5 PAINT code.

Found nothing that sez 5 is RED related. It might have been something only the Dallas Texas Ford assembly plant did.

What I find odd is...this truck was assembled in Dallas, TX. All CA and most OR, WA, UT, NV & AZ sold trucks were assembled in San Jose, CA.

Assembled in Dallas, TX: this might have been related to the red paint color. Quien sabe?

Thats some serious documentation by the guys on the assembly line...I would personally keep every last bit of it...if you could take a wide shot of the paint split area on the front of the bed that would be great...an area rarely seen and hard to otherwise prove where to seperate the colors.

I just looked at the pics again....it appears as the top portion of the air cleaner is a Ca unit as its for the closed crankcase ventilation system...it has the lil curved nipple on it...

PCV valves were required on all CA vehicles beginning in 1961. Other states soon adopted this policy, so don't think that the aircleaner is a CA only unit.

There are several different air cleaners, as you can see.

The parts catalog sez:

C6TZ-9600-E .. Air Cleaner-Oil Bath-1965/67 F100/350 w/a 352 (use with PCV system). Marked: C6TF-9600 E or D / Measures: 12.47" O.D. ~ 4.89" high

C3TZ-9600-Y .. Oil Bath Air Cleaner-1961/66 F100/350 w/a 292 or 352 / Measures: 12.68" O.D. ~ 4.95" high.

cs65, When it comes to restoring I am a nut for taking pics! It takes me a lot longer to pic every piece, marking etc but when done it sure helps to prove how it really was.

I was kind of thinking to use the Calypso Coral because I like it so much but decided because this is such a rare color I will go back to original. I will get some more pics of exactly how the 2tone was done. I am taking bunches of pics of every detail. I will most likely post them in the Projects section? Its very interesting how they did the paint splits and also to find all the grease pencil markings. I have a complete set of original grease pencils so all marking will get put back like they were. I use a trace/carbon so the person who did them could recognize his/her own handwritting. A tecnique I developed years ago.

what does it show for a 300? I am going to post a few pics of the trans cooler as if not a Ford its very well done. 40+yrs of dirt on top of it and appears hose portions may have been replaced at some time but sure looks factory to me.
