Hi folks...just thought I'd let you know that I picked up my brother a 97' Ranger on Sat. It's a xl 4 poper with a dent in the side, cap, and 247,000 mi.
Got it for $100.
-Still runs & drives good, but needs a tire & rear tail light covers; + registration...and it will be back on the road!
-I don't know...is $100 too much to spend on a 97' ??????
no its not too much to spend. but i would be very concerned with the 247k. i wouldnt let him get into situations where the truck could leave him in a life or death situation (example, extremely cold out)
Well worth $100 if it runs, IMO. I wouldn't take $1000 for mine; it would cost me more than that to replace it with something as nice.
I trust my truck damn near anywhere. I drove from Providence RI to Bangor Maine overnight in a snowstorm in March, and I don't have a cell phone...
Not knowing the history, I wouldn't trust that truck so much yet, but once I tuned it up and went over it pretty good, I wouldn't worry about it much, either. (AAA is a nice security blanket, once they get over 200k, too.)
I noticed an ad in the paper...called immediately. I also have a 97' ranger that has some dings in it...was originally looking for the parts to swap, but decided that since it runs & drives so well, we will just keep it on the road.
-Was from the original owner...said he would trust it immediately to drive it 1000+ miles if he had to. I believe him...especially since we have already put on 150+ miles. No leaks, rattles, shakes....but still have to change that tire.
if your brother maintained it the mileage is just a number i try to take care of my truck and id trust it to go almost anywhere . its got 148K on it and it runs like a top
Just remember that those high mileage trucks are more prone to failure with lax maintenance, but if youre brother keeps on top of it and fixes things as they go and not pile up as I have in the past, she should make a good daily driver for the beaten path. I don't have an active cell phone, but I keep an old one charged up in the truck since they tell me that even an unactivated cell phone can still dial and get 911. Havent had occasion to use or test it yet though.
