Axle Codes
The following lists the gear ratios on axles.
l 86 — 3.73 non-limited slip, 2.5L, 3.0L engines, 4x2.
l 87 — 4.10 non-limited slip, 2.5L, 4x2.
l 89 — 4.56 non-limited slip, 2.5L, 3.0L engines, 4x2.
l F6 — 3.73 limited slip, 2.5L, 3.0L engines, 4x2.
l F7 — 4.10 limited slip, 2.5L, 3.0L engines, 4x2.
l 95 — 3.55 non-limited slip, 4.0L engine, 4x2.
l R5 — 3.55 limited slip, 4.0L engine, 4x2.
l 86 — 3.73 non-limited slip, 3.0L engine, 4x4.
l 87 — 4.10 non-limited slip, 3.0L engine, 4x4.

project SHO89. Thanks for all your help. I have been looking for that stuff for days. Didn't want to bother the local dealer. All this was needed as I am looking to buy a Ranger within the next couple of weeks.

I opened it up to find an excessive noise.
turned out to be the outer pinion bearing.
Master Install kit & a Yukon DuraGrip locking differential is ordered

i would think your 2004 would be 28 spline too BUT my 2011 is rear disc brakes so it could be different on your older drum brake application
