I bought a cluster off Ebay for around $100 from a 96 F150 and installed it in my 96 F250 7.5L MAF/OBD2 truck. I took both clusters apart and removed my original speedometer and transplanted it into the tachometer cluster. I don't have many local yards out here in CA, so my only real option was buying it online. It was worth the money to me. I know people said if you had a 96, get a 96 cluster. So that's what I did and it worked just fine. I'd try to find a 1997 cluster and if you can't find that, look for one from a 1996.
In regards to where the mileage is stored, it's kept in the speedometer/odometer module which is part of the cluster.
Good info about the mileage being stored in the cluster. So Tom you'll be needing to swap the speedometer/odometer module into the new cluster with the tach if you want to keep your mileage true. I think that the walkthrough I linked to earlier accounts for this.

It does perfectly and the operation of swapping the parts is extremely simple. Including cleaning up the cluster, checking bulbs, swapping parts, and the removal/install, I was done in less than 45 minutes. YMMV.
On my 92 cluster swap I had to pull my old speedo and put it in the new cluster for the mileage. I have the digital odometer too. It's in that write-up and very easy to do in my years.......Your 97 and up.....I don't know.
I was going to add a tach in an A pillar mount till I found out how easy it was to swap the cluster.
