I am in the process of rewiring my '72 Bronco with the Centech kit. I am having a hard time figuring out the tachometer gauge wiring. I have a MSD ignition installed and have connected the + tach wire to the + end of the coil and grounded the tach by the - post. The most I could get from the tach was a reading of about 1500 rpm, when i rev the engine the tach needle actually dropped to below zero. I switched to the neg end of coil but nothing happened. Is the tach supposed to be wired to the coil? Any ideas on what the problem may be?
You should have 4 wires from the tach (normally)
Red- 12V ignition source
White- dash light feed
Black- ground
Green- tach signal
These are the common colors. Yours may be different. Check the info with your tach to verify.
Ok, the Red wire will go to a 12V source, such as the back of the ignition switch. The White wire will hook to a wire that goes to a dash light bulb (I don't have my Bronco diagram handy, but I think it should be a brown and red wire). The Black wire is ground. It goes to a chassis ground, to battery negative not the coil negative. And the Green tach wire goes to the negative side of the coil.
Assuming that you have an MSD 6 series box (most likely), the wire that would to the "-" side of the coil goes to a connection on the side of the box. I don't know how to discribe it but it is the only place where you can plug a wire in. It is next to the wires going to the coil from the box.
