Hi everyone, I am a new member of this site as of this morning and I joined to try and get some help with my new truck. I bought a new 2006 F150 Supercab (STX 4.6L) about 8 months ago and I am getting ready to take it back the the dealership for the second time because of my fuel milage. I have only seen 13 MPG ONE time since I have owned my truck, and 80% of my driving is highway driving. The first time back to the dealership (2 months after purchasing) they told me I had a bad thermostat and that is what was causing my bad milage. They also told me some of it could have been the weather (colder than normal winter this year). I, being a trusting customer took there word for it, but now we are into May, the weather is great and I still am only seeing MPG in the 12's. Has anyone else had this kind of problem? If so what was causing it? I would love to be able to give my dealership some ideas of things to check before I take it back and they tell me everyhting checks out just fine.
Thanks WheelMA1
I am running with everything stock (I am affraid to make any changes until my milage is where it should be or close too). The stock tires are Ameritrac TR, General's. The size is P225/70 R17. I was using Speedway gas (what I have always used) but after going to the dealership the first time the told me I should use BP gas since that is what Ford recommends so I have been using that and there is no difference in my milage after switching gas.
Ive never heard of that brand. You might want to run a single tank of some name brand (Mobil, Sunoco, Citgo, etc) high test (91+), and see what that does. Have you run any fuel system/injector cleaner through?
Using name brand fuel makes no difference. ABC news worked with an independent lab to verify fuel differences between name brand vs generic . The net net there was no difference.
ABC can run whatever tests they want. My truck knows the difference between 'Joe's Gas' and Shell 93. I am giving him ideas. I fully understand what his truck is tuned for, but clearly he is not getting the desired results. What's a single tank going to hurt? Spank is not going to be the single contributing factor to whether Big Oil makes a profit this quarter or not.
On the last three full tanks I put in my truck I used 93, and I have not added any cleaner but the dealership did the first itme I took it back.
If you scroll down the page, you will see the 'Unofficial Gas Mileage Poll'. Some trucks just don't like getting great mileage. Has the dealership given you any potential reasons why the mileage might be down?

No they haven't told me anything other than the first time I took it back they told me the thermostat was bad, and we were having really cold weather during that time. they told me after changing the thermostat that my milage should jump up a few MPG and after the weather warmed up it will jump some more, however it hasn't really changed much. I went from mid to high 11's (MPG) before the new thermostat and cold weather, to mid to high 12's (MPG) after. It has been in the in the 60's and 70's the last few weeks and my milage is still the same. I am taking it back in this Saturday for them to look at again, but I was hoping someone on here had experienced similar problems and maybe I could take some ideas to the dealer so they could check it out on my truck.
Just a quick story about mileage that you might find interesting. My buddy and I took a road trip from Calgary to LA - about 2500 kms one way. He was driving his 06 screw 5.4L, 3.73 with a 6.5 foot box and fibreglass bed cover. I was driving my 04 screw 5.4L, 3.73 with a 5.5 foot box and a soft tonneau cover. Both trucks are completely stock. We would fill up at the same stations on the way running the same type of fuel. He always burned less gas! I'm not sure what the actual mileage was for each unit, but he would burn anywhere from 1.5 to 3 gallons less per fill. Now we both drive the same way, following each other at the same speeds etc. so the difference must be in the setup. I guess to make a long story short, how you have your truck decked out (tires, accessories et al) can and DOES make a big difference! Also, I suppose the 06 model may have an improved tune over my 04.
Anyway, it wasn't all bad news for me. When we returned, I used the mileage difference as justification and I was able to convince my wife to let me order an XCal 2 from troyer!! Woo-hoo!! I know it likely won't improve the mileage much, but hey, you gotta do what you gotta do!
