Given the limited space in the engine compartment, I don't know how much luck you would have trying to shoehorn a belt-driven compressor in there. You may want to check out Extreme Outback; in particular, their ExtremeAire line of compressors.
The Viairs are decent enough air compressors, but a large number of their compressors are not capable of 100% duty cycle, and that can be a big deal if you are looking at airing large tires back up at the end of a trail.
Additionally, I do not think any of the Viair compressors offer the flow rate of the ExtremeAire compressors (been a bit over a year since I looked through their line-up...they may have stepped up to the plate by now). This will translate into the feasiblity of using air tools; an air tank will help buffer your air needs, but that will not last too long if the air compressor is not keeping up.
Just a few thoughts...having been down this path...
Hey Speedjunky I'm looking for a setup like you are interested in. My uncle just recently bought a '07 psd and put his old flatbed on it. It was a hydraulic pump that is belt driven. I am going to look at his setup and see what size the pump is and where it is mounted, I hope to learn more from there. When I figure out more I'll post it. I think a belt driven compressor is the only way to go for those of us who need the duty cycle and the pressure. I'll do what I can to figure something out. Stay tuned.....
The only thing I don't like is that the comrpessor is mounted on the rail under the bed. I would hate to permanently damage the compressor by getting it soaked in water going through a mud pit, waterhole, etc.
I think I may do something similar but mount the compressor in front left or right of the bed just in front of one of the fenderwells. I can then fit the tank under the bed.
How about one of the new Warn winches... They now have an air compressor built in and they will run air tools and then you have the winch also... Just a thought!!!!!!
Speed, I sorta miss read, missunderstood (or just dumb). When I saw 'belt driven compressor for 6.0' I thought super charger. I think I need to read more carefully. Oh, another excuse...it was after midnite and brain had good to sleep already.
