i am trying to get the sindle off of a 78 f150 w/dana44. i have took the 5 nuts off and even drove the bolts of them out but it is still not coming off! Is there somthing im missing?
Option one, rent a spindle puller. Option two, use a rag and a plastic mallet/hammer. I wrap the rag around the spindle to protect it, and tap on the area between the 2 bearing surfaces, being careful not to hit the bearing surfaces, or the threaded area. Tap a little at a time, all the way around the spindle 360 degrees, and it should move a little at a time. They can be a little stubborn on an older vehicle. I've removed dozens of them this way. I just did one Friday afternoon to replace a lower ball joint on my son's 86 because I don't have access to a spindle puller. Once you get it off, take a wire brush and clean the lip where the spindle sits inside the knuckle. This will make it easier to re-install (a little grease will help keep the rust from coming back).
The slide hammer option works best. Rent one,buy one or build one.I had a large snap-on slidehammer and made a fixture using two old spindle nuts a piece of pipe and a piece of 1/2 in plate. You could probably get by with one nut but I used two for more contact area on the spindle threads. I tightened the two nuts on the spindle tacked them together in the notches made sure they would go on and off easy then used a piece of pipe the nuts fit into, welded the nuts into the pipe, threaded the piece of 1/2 inch plate to fit my slidehammer, welded that to the other end of the pipe and wha-la took four slaps and the spindle was on the floor. I work on alot of these trucks so owning one is a must.
