best engine for a 48 F4

What would be my best bet for an engine in a 1948 Ford F4? I don't nessessarily care about originality, But I definetly want to stick to Ford.
no chevy or other make of engine. It currently has no engine. should I ditch the tranny as well, if so , id like to stick with manual. thanks so much

Best engine? I would say find a running engine trans combo that has the trans you want. What is an F4 anyway?

an f4 is a 1 1/4 ton truck. if i had to pick an engine to put in id probably go with a 351w. you can use a t5 5 speed behind one- its a good combo- but you may want to think about swapping rear gears to something lighter (the stock ratio is probably somewhere around 4.88) like 3.54s or if youre going to be towing much maybe 4.10s. if you were going with an auto id say 460, but not many manuals will stand up to that much torque.

A NP435 should handle a 460 shouldn't it? I realize that it's not a bolt on, but then...what fun is that.

yep itll handle a stock 460, but its iffy on a built one. the zf-5 speed from the 90s will handle a stock one as well, but again on a built one its iffy... the zf can handle around 400 ft lbs, as can a np435, but once you exceed that its hard to find a stick thatll take it. thats why most people go with the c-6 automatic- itll take whatever you throw at it.

What do you plan to use the truck for? I would agree that a 351W, or 460 would be nice in there. If your going to be towing, or hauling anything, a nice mild build on a 460 would be a sweet, problem free, relieable combo. Im with you, I would want to stick to a manual trans also. With a mild 460, I would just get a trans from a 3/4, or 1 ton pickup, that was behind a 460.

Careful... a ZF or T5 is hydraulic so you are gonna need some more fabrication than a NP435 T18/T19

I'd go with a 400 or 460...

Depends on the intended use of the truck. Street driven cruiser, go with the 351W and T5 combo. If you are going to tow some toys, 460 and a C-6 is a sure thing. Could always mate the 460 to NV 4500. Of course not a Ford Trans. Or go with a 390 and T-19 out of a diesel truck with 3.00 running gears. It'd be very steetable, yet could easily tow.
An aside, unless you are going to haul hay or rock crawling a NP 435 or T-18 with a granny gear is just a parking brake. The diesel version of the T-19 is schynco'd in all forward gears, yea, and with the 3.00 differential you have 4 useable forward gears. And the engine will be turning 2K @ about 65 mph.

Or, as Forever suggests, go with a diesel. Cover all the bases, mileage, towing, streetability. Bit of work and expensive however.

Well... For an all around decent engine, go with a 300 inline six. Build it if you want more HP. But it depends on what your options are? Obviously a 351 has more power, but the 300 is a pretty awesome engine. They run smoothly and forever (not saying AT ALL the 351 isn't).

I'd say, a beefed up 300, 400, 7.3(powerstroke or IDI), or 6BT Cummins(if there was room)
