UMMM... need some advice/help.

Hey Everybody!!!
Anyone know anything about replacing the fuel pump on a '77 F150 w/ 351 M-block? I'm about to do it... but not sure about how to set the "crankshaft to the lowpoint"... I was told this is very important to do before removing the pump....

The fuel pump is run off an eccentric. It is much easier to reinstall the new pump if the eccentric is not depressing the fuel pump lever.

It's really not an important issue except the pump is easier to install with it on the low side of the eccentric. you can loosen the pump though and try to move it, then turn the crank you will be able to feel when it's on the low side of the eccentric. (hard to explain but you will know it when you try it)

Alright... I just went to turn the engine... but I obviously don't know how to do that either. I thought that turning the fan would turn the engine( It does in my mustang, which is a stick), but it doesn't seem to in an automatic. So how do I turn the engine?

Thanks alot!

Use a 15/16" socket on the balancer bolt, only turn the motor CLOCKWISE (to the right). As long as you are down there, you can set it to 0 on the harmonic balancer with the timing mark... that usually put the eccentric in the position you want.

I think its a little easier if you take the power steering pump off... just remove the bracket bolts and set the whole assembly to the side, its only three bolts if you don't have A/C.

Its the big bolt in the center of the bottom pulley, connected directly to the crankshaft.

If it's not too late...

Don't worry about it. I've put three fuel pumps on my 351M without paying any attention to the crankshaft position...it really isn't that difficult...remove the fuel lines, remove the two bolts holding the pump on, and when you install the new one, you MAY have to exert some pressure to hold it in place while you put in the bolts...but not that much...no biggie.

Usually when loosening the fuel pump bolts when the eccentric is in the wrong place the fuel pump will start to pull away in an umnormal way.

It is more important to have it in the right position when installing the new one.

also, could you please title your thread with the actual topic? see Post#1 in the FAQ thread.

ie: Locating fuel pump eccentric

It is Important because it not only allows us to know what the actual topic of the thread is before we open it ....but aids others when searching the same topic.

The title data base is a LOT smaller than the message box data base.

We are always here to Help...The word "Help" in a title.... means nothing

Same here... only done a couple fuel pumps, but never bothered with the eccentric position. It can be easier for a first timer though... and I know its easier with the PS bracket out of the way.

Cool

Yea... I got it off... but as anyone who has my luck would know... the new fuel pump will not work. Mine is mounted from the top and bottom, and of course, the new one is on the sides... gotta go get another one tomorrow. I guess I should've expected that something was gonna go wrong. Well, thanks again guys!!! You'll prolly here from me sooner than later.

That's one of the identifying things about the 351M/400 engines.

The vertical fuel pump mounting holes.

Dennis is right, I am guessing they gave you a pump for a 351W instead of a 351M
