Question Some advice needed please.

I am going to trade my Expedition for something larger. I was thinking of a diesel Excursion. About 25% of the time I will be towing a trailer. One is 7k and the other is 10k. We take long trips so I want more room and more power. Is 10k too much for the Excursion, or should I go to a CC pick-up, maybe a 250 or even a 350? I also need it to be a 4x4. Thanks for any help.

I have the V10. I am not sure of the wieght ratings, but I had a 1/2 ton dodge hemi(no slouch) and pulled a 18ft dump trailer full of concrete pavers etc. I thought it was going to break the dodge(had to put front pads on brakes at 30,000 after towing it one time 50 miles) the excursion will pull the that same trailer and does not even know it is there. I will check the weight ratings in the morning for you if you want. I drove a deisel also and liked the v10 better but mileage bites, around 13 hwy. Deisel may get 16 but deisel is still 30 cents more pr gallon av., and the v10 was black and pretty...................

I would deff go buy the excursion. The weight u are pulling won't even hurt it. Get the v-10 or the psd, but if i had to buy it all over again it would be the v-10.

I have a 2002 diesel Excursion and I pull a trailer that is 8000 pounds routinely (loaded) as well as the rest of the family, luggage, etc.. My X weighs right at 7600 pounds so if I throw in another 1500 pounds for the 5 person family...that puts me at 17100 pounds, or right at 2900 pounds below the limit of 20000 pounds for GCVW.

I think you'd do fine with an X. I love mine. Make sure you get a good sway control hitch & I've also heard about mods for rear-end sway bars...that might be good. I drove through GA and AL about 3 weeks ago with winds gusting to 40 knots....would not want to do that again, even though I have a great sway control hitch.

By the way...with the cruise on 65 mph, I get right at 8-9 mpg with the diesel towing and about 14-15 unloaded with the cruise on 78 mph.

Good Luck.

Thanks for all the replies.
Should I assume that a 4.10 rear is the way to go?
Is the frame and suspension the same as an F series?
What kind of mods are needed to tow?

I tow with my Diesel Excursion a 14,000 weekend warrior loaded. So far the Only Mod is air bags. I plant to get tow mirroows and banks power soon.

yeah, get the taller gear (I'm not sure what the diesel gear options are (if there are any)) but if you do go with the V10, get the 4.30's. They are better for towing, but worse for mpg.

diesel comes standard with 3.73s and could go a little lower er taller that is but you can always run a taller tire and get the same effect. air bags are a good option rear stabilizer too, after that there is no end to what you can do to these things.

I have the v 10 with 4.30s and just got 305 tires, at 65mph the comp. shows 12.5 mpg but when I hand calculate city and highway It shows about 9.6 mpg Which is better than my boat that gets about 1 gallon per mile.
